Personal Safety Lessons

February - 2019

Dear Families,

Care For Kids is a personal safety program that takes place for 4 weeks in February during classroom guidance lessons for pre-school through second grade students.  The lessons are part of our counseling program and the American School Counseling Association mindsets and behaviors.  Students are to demonstrate personal safety skills with their behavior and self-management skills.

Why should my child learn this information?

Teaching children at an early age that certain touches and behaviors are not OK, can help them be less vulnerable.

What will my child learn?

Visit 1:  Bodies  Understanding Privacy and Identifying Private Parts

*Our bodies are good and special

*Boys and girls all have private parts

Visit 2:  Empathy:  Developing Empathy (Nurturing and Caring for others)

*Babies need help with most things and deserve to be looked after

*Children as they grow learn to do more things by themselves but they still need some

help

*Private parts are kept private.

*Small children sometimes need help caring for their private parts

Visit 3:  Touches

*When you’re not sure what you’re feeling, we call that a “mixed up “ or “confused feeling

Visit 4:  Touching and Secrets:  Identifying Touch (Good/Bad/Mixed Up?) & (Good/Bad Secrets)

*Sometimes we like touching and sometimes we don’t

*A person may say”no” to touching & we don’t touch a person who says no

*Sometimes we want to keep a secret and sometimes we don’t

*Touching is never a secret

*When you are sad or mixed up about the way someone touches you - talk to an adult

How will this program benefit my child?

The Care For Kids program provides children and parents with this important information by handling this issue in a sensitive manner while empowering young children as well as their parents.

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year!

2017-2018

I believe that all children are special. unique and all have  differences.  All actions and reactions are very personal in nature.

Guidelines in my classroom are:
1.  You may engage in any behavior that does not create a problem for you or anyone else in the world.
2.  If you find yourself with a problem, you may solve it by any means that does not cause a problem for anyone else in the world.
3.  You may engage in any behavior that does not jeopardize the safety or learning of yourself or others.  Unkind words and actions will not be tolerated.
(Taken from "Teaching with Love and Logic" Jim Fay/David Funk)

I will treat you with respect,
so you will know how to treat me.

Feel free to do anything that doesn't
cause a problem for anyone else.

If you cause a problem,
I will ask you to solve it.

If you can't solve the problem, or choose not to,
I will do something.

What I do will depend on the special person,
And the special situation.

If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me,
"I'm not sure that's fair", and we will talk.
