Adil E. Shamoo, PhD

Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology University of Maryland School of Medicine;

Adjunct Professor, Department of Epidemiology, West Virginia University School of Public Health

Dr. Shamoo is a professor and former chair at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He was appointed by US President Bill Clinton to be a member of the National Human Research Protections Advisory Committee (NHRPAC).

He has since served on the Defense Health Board (DHB) as an appointee under both the Bush and Obama presidential administrations. For ten years at DHB, he chaired the Medical Ethics Subcommittee. In 1988, he founded and is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Accountability in Research, and has served on the editorial board of many other journals.

Dr. Shamoo has lectured over three hundred times worldwide on topics ranging from issues in ethics, science, and public policy. He has held visiting professorships at notable institutions, including Sarah Lawrence College, the Institute for Political Studies in Paris, France, L’Aquila University in Italy, and West Virginia University.

Dr. Shamoo has written over three hundred articles and has authored, coauthored, or edited seventeen books, including his textbooks, Responsible Conduct of Research (with David Resnik, 2003, 2009, and 2015 3rd edition); Ethics of the Use of Human Subjects in Research (with Felix Gyi, 2002).

Since 1994, Shamoo has taught a graduate course on the responsible conduct of research. He chaired the Ethics and Regulatory Forum of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), and he has held full-time faculty appointments at NIH, University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York, and the University of Louisville.
