The parent-school relationship is essential for a thriving community, with research consistently finding that teacher and family relationships are important for young people’s social and emotional wellbeing and academic achievement (Desforges & Aboucher, 2003). The key to building successful relationships starts, and ends, with good communication.

With many new families starting at Russell Street all the time this week is a great opportunity to think about and remind everybody about our communication systems at Russell Street School. Communication is increasingly important and complex to navigate in this day and age.

Our primary resource for communicating from school is the TNB (Thursday Notice Board) and being an online newsletter it is updated almost daily, passing on information as we receive it. This includes upcoming school events, supporters club activities, community notices etc. There are also a range of links to more information.

We strongly encourage families to read the TNB online as it allows us to target the printing costs straight back into learning programs. From our peak before being an online newsletter we calculate that we are saving over $2000 which is going directly back to benefit students.

Our website www.russellst.school.nz  is updated less regularly but holds a wealth of information especially around long term goals, school policy and procedures. It contains links to all the important information and online spaces including all the class blogs. You can find out more about staff and the BOT members including their email address.

Seesaw is our online learning platform for students. This is an app you download to your phone or connect email addresses. Any member of your family can be joined up to your

child’s seesaw account. We post to these regularly with learning stories and classroom events or activities. Every class has an online learning space that has examples of children’s events and activities that is public for parents and the wider community. Examples of children's learning and links to websites that can support children's learning at home can be found on your child's class blog.

Spending time having an informal chat or booking an appointment with teachers is still encouraged. Emailing teachers directly is a super way to stay informed with what is happening at a class level. Examples of children's learning and links to websites that can support children's learning at home can be found on your child's class blog. Spending time having an informal chat or booking an appointment with teachers is still encouraged.

We send SMS/ TXT messages to directly message you from the school cellphone about important events and as a reminder to check the TNB on a Thursday. If you have additional family members you would like added to the list please email the office. Incoming TXT messages are rarely checked so do not reply.

There is a school calendar with the terms events and assembly schedule. This has a page on the school website and can be found at the top of the TNB. These events do change as the term goes on so check regularly.

Finally a great communication tool is the PTC school calendar app downloadable from the apple and play web stores. This has a calendar, school contacts and a push notification function.

If you would like to access any school technologies the library and main block hallway computers are available. If would like a tutorial in receiving better communication and being informed call in or send me an email.
