My Opinion On B.Y.O.D.

B.Y.O.D. (a.k.a. Bring your own device) has begun at RTMS! This program is spreading, and is being introduced to schools all across the Peel region, and possibly Ontario! Students are allowed to bring in their phones, IPod touches, computers, (I think... Correct me if I'm wrong) and any devices they own (within reason). I think that B.Y.O.D. will affect RTMS in a few ways. Students will feel more open and feel that they have less restrictions on them. I believe that this may cause problems, because students will think this is true, and they may become less obedient. For example, if a student brings their IPod into class with headphones, and they listen while working, a teacher may need to announce new instructions. The student will not hear them, and when someone tells them of the new instructions, depending on the student they may act differently. One student might respond immediately to the change, whereas another may think it doesn't matter and will continue their previous task, which may in the end result in a visit to the office or a call home depending on the severity. The key points here are responsibility and attitude. Students must understand that B.Y.O.D. is set up as a tool to help learning, and not a distraction or an obstacle in their learning career. Therefore, B.Y.O.D. will aid students as long as they are responsible about it and will understand how to act in certain situations. This will also help the students in the long run! So they might as well get started now.
