Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back to another school year here at Poultney High School.  To those of you who are new to our building, welcome to our family!  For the rest, I would like to welcome you back and look forward to all of us, each and every student and staff member, having a successful year.

Success can have various definitions.  PHS was one of the handful of Vermont schools to be honored with a US News and World Report national ranking with a bronze ranking.  While some say that makes us a successful school, to me it is just one piece of the puzzle.  We have staff and students who are not afraid to try new things - who are not afraid of failing, because we learn and grow from our failures.  Never giving up and having a strong work ethic is also a sign of success.

In order to be successful, we need students here in the building every day.  Our schedule has not changed – first bell is at 7:50 and we still have our WIN block.  It is imperative that students are here as excessive absenteeism can be a deterrent to the educational learning process.

Another sign is adapting to change.  There are many changes this year at PHS.  You will be hearing about us consolidating with West Rutland and Proctor to become the Quarry Valley District beginning next year.  You will also hear about Proficiency Based Grading and Habits of Work (HOW).  I will be communicating with you throughout the year on all of these new initiatives.  It is important that if your contact number and email change throughout the year that you please be sure to contact Mrs. Grenier so that we have the most up to date information.

I also ask that you please check in on our website – www.phsvt.org – as it is updated daily with our announcements and links to your student’s teachers’ web pages and parent portal.  There is a wealth of information on there, including the handbook, updated daily calendar on school events, and staff contact information.

I am honored to be part of your students learning this year.  I want to thank you for allowing us to educate your child.  The biggest advantage to our small size is that we are able to know each and every one of our students individually.  If there are any issues, I encourage you to please contact me.  The only problems that we cannot solve are the ones that we do not know about.  Together, I know we can make your student’s year a successful one.

Sincerely,

Joe DeBonis
