BACKGROUND: Mr. Young is in his 24th year of teaching English at Kennebunk High School. Prior to that he worked 14 years in professional baseball and professional hockey as a sportscaster/publicist. He also coached high school soccer, basketball, softball and baseball in Connecticut for parts of eight years. He has published three books of essays, Young Ideas (2014), Work(s) in Progress (2022)., and Life in 600 Words (2024), each of which consists largely of columns that have appeared previously in the Windham Eagle, the Yarmouth Notes, the Portland Press Herald, and various other current and former Maine newspapers. Mr. Young's three children are currently attending college; Will is a sophomore at the University of Maine-Orono, Mischa is a junior at the University of Connecticut, and Thomas is a graduate student at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Mr. Young spends his free time biking, reading, writing, and officiating youth baseball and soccer games in his hometown.
GOAL(S): Mr. Young's primary aim is to help each KHS student acquire the skills necessary to help them become successful in all that they aspire to be. He also hopes to learn as much (or more) from his students as they learn from him (and from each other).
COMMUNICATION PHILOSOPHY: As a teacher of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking skills, Mr. Young strongly believes in the value of direct, face-to-face communication (as opposed to the electronic kind). With that in mind, if you have questions or concerns, but coming to KHS during school hours isn't feasible for you, please feel to contact him via e-mail (ayoung@rsu21.net) with any and all concerns. Mr. Young is always available for extra help during his planning blocks, during lunch, before school, or after school.
HISTORICAL NOTE: In 23 years of teaching hundreds of individuals at KHS, it is a fact that no student has ever left Mr. Young's class hating English. However, in occasional cases where hatred of the subject existed before the student in question encountered Mr. Young's influence, well...... Mr. Young does not yet have the ability to alter willfully negative attitudes, although he is perpetually working to develop that particular skill.
