An MDOE Collaboration with FLAME and ACTFL

Last spring the Maine State Legislature passed law MSRA 4722 requiring that all students graduate with a standards-based diploma by 2017. Don Reutershan of the MDOE in collaboration with FLAME and ACTFL organized a summer institute to help prepare world language teachers to meet this expectation. At this summer institute, eighteen teachers were trained to disseminate the work of this initiative through workshops given around the state during the current school year. The goal of these workshops is to assist teachers with implementing standards- based unit design and summative assessments.

The workshops will include:
Connections between National Standards, the MLR, Common Core, and 21st Century Skills, and creating a standards-based unit for your students using:
  • essential questions
  • the 3 modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational)
  • proficiency levels
  • rubrics
  • And much more!
The workshop for the Knox, Waldo, Lincoln and Sagadahoc regions will be held at the Samoset Resort in Rockport on Friday, January 25th, 2013 from 8:00 A.M to 2:30 P.M. It will be presented by Matthew Mazzeo, foreign language teacher at Oceanside High School - West in Thomaston. There is no cost to attend. Contact hours will be available.  The Workshop is being held one day prior to Winterfest in Camden and two days prior to Winter Carnival in Rockland.  See:

Participants wishing to stay at the Samoset Resort may receive a special discounted rate for teachers of $99 or $90 for teacher AAA members.

Comments from some Summer Institute participants:
  • Clear connections were made between the Common Core, the MLR, and standards-based.
  • The sessions were spot-on for what I needed to improve my program.
  •  We don’t have to change everything we are doing!
