Essay Samples with Teacher Comments:
The following sample essays contain comments from me on what the students should focus on to improve their writing.
There are many things to focus on when giving feedback to students (focus, organization/structure, evidence/support, punctuation/grammar, transitions/flow, language, etc.). Using a rubric like the ones above will help you to evaluate your child's writing in each of these areas. However, feedback in the form of comments will be the most valuable tool for helping your child improve his/her writing. If there is a punctuation/spelling error, I usually only point it out once with the expectation that the student will look through his/her work to correct all similar errors. I would recommend doing something similar at home so your child is not overwhelmed with 'red marks' on small issues. This will allow your child to focus more on your comments on larger issues in areas like focus, organization, and support.

How to Give Meaningful Feedback - a guide for homeschool parents
If you're struggling to give feedback on writing at home, I recommend utilizing the Brainfuse program through the Shasta County Public Library; this free resource allows your child to submit writing online and receive feedback through the writing lab (all you need is a library card!).
