"Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program."

-American Music Therapy Association

In the public school setting, music therapy has been established as a "related service" under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). If a student qualifies for services (see "Evaluations" in the toolbar for more information on the qualification process), music therapy will address goals and objectives in his/her Individualized Education Plan. These goal areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Social skills

  • Pre-academic and academic skills (based on the student's grade and functioning level)

  • Cognitive skills

  • Motor skills

  • Emotional regulation

  • Vocational and work-related skills (age 14 and older, if applicable)

In RRISD, music therapy uses a wide variety of experiences - including (but not limited to) singing, instrument-playing, music and movement, music and multisensory experiences, and songwriting - to address the aforementioned skill areas. Students who qualify for music therapy services may be seen individually or in a group, depending on the needs and IEP objectives of the student. Sessions are structured, productive, and of course, FUN!

Please visit the "Helpful Links" section (on the upper toolbar) to find resources related to music therapy as well as musical tools and resources to use at home.
