Welcome to the Wizard's Web site!

  • Be sure to check our web site each week for updates on activities and happenings in our classroom and at LME.

******It was so much fun seeing so many wizards and their families at the LME family picnic! I hope you had a fun evening visiting with friends and making some new ones! Thank you to everyone for coming out and supporting our school!

*****This past week we learned about being a good citizen in school and even when we are not in school. We read some of Aesop's fables and learned how these animals showed good citizenship and learned some great lessons for making good choices! We made a mini book of some of our favorite fables! In math we worked on skip counting by even and odd numbers and even skip counting backwards! We used the iPads, math racks and number frames to help us count and show teen numbers and how to break numbers apart! In writing we started to learn how an author writes a story. We made a list of some of the things we would like to write stories about this year! We did a great job on our first spelling test! We practiced the short a vowel pattern throughout the week in our writing and on the iPads! On Friday we had fun playing and exploring all of the building games in our classroom: blocks, Legos, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, Marble Run, and Gears. We used our team work skills and cooperating and we had some very creative building!
This week we will be looking at some of the symbols that represent the United States. We will be working on properties of matter in science and sorting objects by size, shape, color and textures. We will begin to write our first story in writer's workshop. We will discuss some of the ways authors start their stories. In math we will be working on some "counting on" strategies to help us with our counting and mental math skills. This week our spelling unit covers the short e vowel pattern in words. We will take our pre-test on Monday and have our spelling test on Friday! This week we have P.E. for specials on Friday!

    ****Excellence Fund Campaign:
Our Excellence Fund Campaign ends next Friday, September 22nd and our class would love to win a FUN FRIDAY but we need your help! In order to qualify for a Fun Friday we need all of our parents to participate in the Excellence Fund Campaign. Even if you cannot make a donation at this time, we still need each family to complete the online support form in order for our class to be eligible for the participation awards. I encourage all of our families who have not yet participated to CLICK HERE and complete our online support form

Your support of the Excellence Fund confirms that our parents, teachers and community strongly believe in the vision and mission of Laurel Mountain.
We need all of the wizard families to help us reach our goal of 100% support for the SEM Excellence Fund Campaign! Our class has only six families that have completed the form online. Remember if you do not wish to donate you can still help us by filling out the form online so that our class will qualify for the "FUN FRIDAY" event that will take place later in the year! Please click on the link above and fill in the form. Thanks for all of your support for our great school!!!

Idiom of the Week

  • Each week we will be learning the meaning
of an idiom. An idiom is a commonly used
expression that means something different from
what it appears to mean. The English language
is filled with idiomatic expressions, and knowing
what idioms mean is an important part of a child's
growing knowledge and fluency with language.
They can often be difficult because of the two
levels of meaning: the literal and the idiomatic
meaning. Learning about idioms is a great way
to help children see the fun in word play and
enjoy language in general.I hope you will help
your wizard by using the idiom of the week
whenever you can at home! Have fun!

Problem of the week

  • Each week we practice the different problem solving strategies we are learning in class. The students may work on these problems with a friend, in a group, or at home. On Thursday mornings we present our answers and discuss the different strategies that we used to solve the problem. You are welcome to work with your child on these problems! I am confident that you will be amazed at all of the different ways your wizard will be able to solve problems as the year progresses and the problems become more challenging! Good Luck!
