Pumpkin Exploration!

posted by Amy Curtis

Our local HEB (at the corner of Parmer and McNeil) donated a class set of PUMPKINS to the FAC! Thank you HEB! Each student gets their own pumpkin to keep at school for two weeks for our hands-on “Pumpkin Exploration” unit.

Students are able to use and practice various skills as they engage with their pumpkins HANDS-ON; scientific inquiry and experimentation, reading about pumpkins and doing research online, writing about their pumpkins (observational and creative), as well as discussing the history of pumpkins and Fall holidays.

At the end of our Pumpkin Exploration unit on October 31st the students bring home their pumpkins to eat or to decorate or to carve!

Howdy!
The McNeil FAC is ready to get back into the swing of things on August 22nd! Please see my links for a list of school/classroom supplies :)
This is going to be a great year, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again. This year we will be continuing our Book Club; exposure to age-appropriate literature and practice on those important critical skills like reading and listening comprehension, finding main ideas and summarizing, as well as identifying characters and story elements. Not to mention writing conventions!
We also will continue the Easter Seals "Job Club" (what used to be "Employment and Beyond") for a few weeks this Fall. This is a great program that allows an Easter Seals representative to visit the classroom once a week and teach important vocational soft skills as well as resume building, interview skills and job preference exploration!
Please contact me with any questions or concerns!

Hello Parents and friends!

Welcome back to school! It's going to be a productive and learning-filled year, as the McNeil FAC has lots of community exposure, functional learning, vocational practice and academics going on!

Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns at my classroom number #512-464-6416; or make an appointment to meet during my conference time which is  10:45-12:00 daily.

I've taught in the FAC here at McNeil for 5+ years, and I'm so excited to be a member of the McNeil HS community!

Hello Parents and Guardians!

I am looking forward to getting back to school and working with all my terrific students! Ms. Freitas, my co-teacher, and I will send out case-management letters soon to let you know who your student's case manager will be.

I am looking forward to working with you all this coming year, and we have some exciting events. Besides monthly CBVI (community-based vocational instruction) field trips, we will be working on a Remnant Book project. A remnant book is a visual and tactile representation of important events in a student's life as well as a record of special events/moments. Creating remnant books also encourages students to write creatively on relevant topics. We will also be planting and growing a class "pumpkin patch."

Here are some important upcoming events:

Colt Camp starts at 5 p.m. on August 20th.

Open House is on the evening of September 2nd; hope to see everyone there!

Please see below for FAC supply list:

Pencils
Markers
folders
wet wipes
disinfectant spray (i.e. Lysol)
tissues
glue sticks

Thanks!

Arson Dog and Mr. Frederick Visit the FAC!

Arson Dog and Mr. Frederick Visit the FAC!

Mr. Frederick and his companion "service" dog Leo visited the FAC today, January 26th, to the delight of all the teachers and students. Mr. Frederick is a police detective who investigates arson with his "fire dog" Leo, who has been trained to smell accelerant. We have been studying "service" dogs in class so Mr. Frederick's visit was very timely. Leo is a very friendly and sweet dog, and the students had the opportunity this morning to interact with Leo and pet him if they chose. Find pictures below!

Hello Parents and Guardians!

I am looking forward to getting back to school and working with all my terrific students! As you probably know, Mrs. Clark has retired after 30 years of teaching. She and I were the FAC teachers last year. This year Mrs. Freitas will be taking Mrs. Clark's position as the FAC co-teacher. We will send out case-management letters soon to let you know which teacher, either Mrs. Freitas or me, will be your student's case manager.

I am looking forward to working with you all this coming year, and we have some exciting events. Besides monthly CBVI (community-based vocational instruction) field trips, we will be crafting an FAC "teamwork" quilt as well as planting and growing a class "pumpkin patch." We will also be introducing "reading buddies" with our FLC neighbors.

Please see below for FAC supply list:

Pencils
Markers
Highlighters
white card stock
folders
wet wipes
white out
disinfectant spray (i.e. Lysol)
tissues
glue sticks

Thanks!
