that shape today, but I can help you get in the best shape in your life! As part of my training, I provide my clients with nutritional programming and nutritional supplementation counseling. And today I want to talk about The Miracles - yes Miracles -  of omega -3 fatty acids.
Omega-3 fatty acids have been known to be essential to healthy growth since the 1930s.

However it was a study of the Greenland Inuit Tribe back in the 1970s that uncovered some exciting medicinal benefits to omega-3s. Although the Inuits ingested  large amount of meat, there was virtually no incidence of cardiovasular disease. That was the start of many scientific studies that have found many positive benefits to omega-3s. Now, for the purporses of this article,  I am not going to be to as technical as I do with my clients (get into the chemistry), so for those of you who want to dig in further, send me an email, give me a call, or I even recommend this link to the Wikipedia citation on omega-3 fatty acid.

I like to call omega-3s the miracle food substance - or scientifically - miracle macronutrient. In my opinion no other food will do more for you. How about helping reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer for starters.  Several studies report possible anti-cancer effects of omega-3s on breast, colon and prostate cancer. Evidence also suggests that people with vericose veins and high blood pressure can benefit from omega-3s.  And a clinical study in 1999 published in the respected medical journal, The Lancet, reported on 11,324 patients with recent heart attacks that a treatment of 1 gram per day of omega-3 reduced the occurance of death, cardiovascular death and sudden cardiac death by 20%, 30% and 45% respectively!

Let me rattle off more health benefits: rhuematoid arthritis,  neurological disorders like psychosis, schizophrenia and depression, hardening of the arteries, Alzheimers, and the ailment common to most all of these maladies- INFLAMMATION. And on the frontier of research, work is being done on omega-3s' benefit to ADHD, low birth weight and further work on psychiatric disorders.

Ready to increase your intake of omega-3s, but not sure how to get you omega-3s? Naturally we get omega-3s from both fish and plants. Cold water fish like salmon, herring, anchovies, mackeral and others are high in EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) fatty acids. While plants olive oil, linseed oil, walnuts and pecans are high in ALA (a-linolenic acid) fatty acids. Andsources of omega-3sbecause we need all three, in a perfect world we would be getting our omega-3s from fish and plants. I believe by using olive oils and flaxseed oils you can ingest your daily requirement of plant based omega-3s. However, for most of us we need to add supplements to our intake of fish oil. This is where it can get tricky. Depending on your physiology and lifestyle your might require 1000mg of omega-3 fish oil supplements. DON'T LET THE LABEL FOOL YOU! On the label it might indicate 1000mg of fish oil, but THAT DOES NOT EQUATE TO 1000mg of omega-3s. Read the fine print and you will see the actual omega-3s content.
