Teaching Philosophy
 Effective teaching requires three "R's":
Rigor, Relationship, and Relevance.

Rigor:  I hold fast to the idea that the best teachers have high expectations and maintain a class that demands the best from its teacher and students.
Relationship:  I have found that when I forge a meaningful student-teacher relationship, then I can teach more effectively to the students as people.  This "r" also involves mutual respect between the teacher and student.
Relevance:  Students are more motivated to learn concepts and skills that affect their lives in an important way.  This "r" includes students the latitude to work in a way that suits their learning style.  It also includes focused and timely feedback on assignments, quizzes, tests, and essays.

About the Teacher
I was born and raised in the midwest and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana with a bachelor's of arts degree.  I graduated with a major in English literature and a minor in secondary education.  I earned a master's degree in liberal arts from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia.  I earned National Board certification in 2004 as a teachers of English language arts for high school students.

I have been teaching English for 17 years.  Two of those years were teaching conversational English in Tsu, Mie-ken in Japan.  I also taught high school English at Bassett High School in Virginia before my current position for the past thirteen years at RCHS.
