Sassafras Springs Inspiration

In The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs, Eben sets off with his trusty sidekick, Sal, in hopes of finding the wonders of Sassafras Springs in seven days. If he does, he'll get his wish to see some of the wonders of the world! Check out our Seven Wonder's blog and website for more info and to see the discussions that we've had.

The students at SCS have been intensively researching and exploring the area in the hopes of finding the amazing wonders of our town, Sudbury, Vermont. We were inspired when reading the book, The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs. In the book, a young boy named Eben, who is intrigued by the wonders of the world, wants to travel to see the wonder's of Colorado, from his dusty town of Sassafras Springs, Missouri. The only way his pa will by him a ticket is if he finds seven wonders right in his little town. He sets off on the daunting task to earn his passage and finds out so many awesome things about his little, dusty town that he never knew before.

Wonder Research

Students have been out and about in our community, speaking with residents and searching for "wonders" in our little town. Sometimes the wonders aren't right under your nose. We don't have any pyramids or great walls that line our borders, but we do have some pretty cool places, people and stories that enrich our lives. As a matter of fact, one of the "wonders" of Sudbury are the people who live and have lived here.

Here are some of our thoughts and opinions about the coolest things that we've learned so far about Sudbury.

The 2/3 class has been out investigating some of their chosen wonders. After cutting down a Christmas tree for the school, they headed over to the town meeting house and then to Hyde Manor to see what was left of the once brilliant resort. Although we can only see a shadow of what once stood there, the students have read about its wonderful history. Sudbury is such a cool place! Did you know that Hyde Manor once had 1/8 of a mile of covered porches?
