Our program has a thoughtful balance between free play and guided learning through group time, projects, stories and thematic activities.

The RNE Early Childhood Programs believe in the following principles of development and learning that are critical in developmentally appropriate practice:
  • Children learn best when their physical needs are met and they feel psychologically safe and secure.Developmentally appropriate practice calls for active play and periods of quiet, restful activity. The environment is safe and secure where everyone is accepted.
  • Children construct knowledge.  A child discovers knowledge though active experimentation.  Children learn through social interaction with adults and children.
  •  The teacher encourages and fosters parent-child relationships as well as relationships with peers and other adults by supporting the child’s efforts and later allowing the child to function independently.
  • Children learn through play. Play provides opportunities for exploration, experimentation, and manipulation that are essential for constructing knowledge and contributes to the development of representational thought.
  • Children’s interest and ‘need to know’ motivate learning.Teachers identify what interests children and allows them to solve problems together. A love of learning and curiosity is fostered.
  • Human development and learning are characterized by individual variation.
  • Everyone develops at their own rate and has different styles of learning.

STep Ahead Recognition System (STARS)

We are a 5 STAR Program

The STep Ahead Recognition System (STARS) is Vermont's quality recognition system for child care, preschool, and afterschool programs. Programs that participate in STARS are stepping ahead, going above and beyond state regulations to provide professional services that meet the needs of children and families. The more stars a program has, the more it is involved in a wide range of practices that support children, families, and professionals. STARS is used by professionals who can take the opportunity to look at their program objectively and use child care quality indicators to identify strengths and areas for improvement. The primary incentive for participating in STARS is local and statewide recognition of our program's achievements.

What do the STARS mean? Providers may apply for STARS recognition in five areas: (1) Compliance with state regulations; (2) Staff qualifications and training; (3) Interaction with and overall support of children, families and communities; (4) How thoroughly providers assess what they do and plan for improvements; and (5) The strengths of the program's operating policies and business practices.

Caverly's Preschool Program has a five-star program rating through the STARS Program. Five-star programs are outstanding in all five areas as indicated above.
