Music Word Wall

  • forte - strong or loud
  • mezzo-forte - moderately loud
  • mezzo-piano - moderately soft
  • piano - soft
  • sforzando - suddenly very loud
  • crescendo - becoming louder
  • decrescendo or diminuendo - becoming softer

  • pitch - how high or low a note is (important: "high" does not mean loud, and "low" does not mean soft!)
  • melody - a series of notes; a tune
  • harmony - notes or chords that complement (sound¬†nice or interesting¬†with) a melody
  • ostinato - repeating pattern of rhythm or notes that accompanies a melody
  • counter-melody - a secondary melody that harmonizes with the main melody
  • timbre - the quality of a particular sound (example: trumpets and pianos have very different timbres)

  • beat - the steady pulse of music
  • rhythm - how sounds are arranged over the beats
  • tempo - the speed of the beat (example: how many beats per minute)
  • syncopation - rhythm in which stressed notes fall between beats

  • ensemble - a group of musicians playing or singing together
  • duet - a piece for two musicians
  • trio - a piece for three musicians, or a group of 3 musicians
  • quartet/ quintet/ sextet/ septet/ octet/ nonet - a piece for 4/5/6/7/8/9 musicians, or a group of that number
  • composer - someone who writes music
  • conductor - someone who directs an ensemble, keeping everyone together and creating specific sounds
  • musician - you!
