We recently sold another company's listing that was vandalized after we went under contract (plumbing ripped out, among other things).  I believe these homes are sought out through the web not necessarily just by outside appearance.  Regardless, if you will be listing a vacant home in an area prone to or at risk of this happening please get with me as I have some solid ideas for preventing it including but not limited to:

Alarm signage
Imitation video cameras
Virtual staging
Putting alarm in comments (?)
