SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER REQUIREMENTS
Social Security Number Requirements
F-1 students may apply for a social security number in person with the Social Security Administration only after a job offer has been secured or employment has begun. A social security number is a requirement for all persons who work and receive pay in the U.S.
You apply for the Social Security Number (SSN) in person at a local Social Security office. After submitting your application, you should receive the SSN card within one month. If you do not receive the card within 30 days, return to the Social Security office to inquire or call the toll-free phone number: (800) 772-1213. Do NOT apply for a second card; you should have only one SSN in your lifetime. If you continue to experience difficulties obtaining the card, contact the Center for Global Engagement.
Although the SSN will be requested during many daily activities such as banking, utilities, phones, etc., it is only required for employment. For purposes other than employment, ask the service provider about acceptable alternative ID numbers or documentation (passport and I-20).
You must apply in person at the nearest Social Security office. Take the original documents noted below. With the exception of the Social Security Card Application (SS-5), all other documents will be copied and returned immediately to you.
Take all of these documents to the nearest Social Security Office located at:
