The University of Valparaiso is a public institution of higher education, complex and extensive, of state character, with proper patrimony, which is ruled by means of his statute and his organic regulation, inspired by the essential beginning of the freedom, the democracy and the pluralism.
Valparaiso University was founded as an autonomous institution of higher learning on February 12, 1981, on the basis of which until then was the most important regional headquarters of the University of Chile. However, the true origins of the University of Valparaiso dating back to 1878, when, at the initiative of Don Eduardo de la Barra, was organized the first Law School in Valparaiso. In 1911 it was transformed in the course of Fiscal Law, which would later give way to what is now the School of Law.

Students are required to have a minimum 2.5 GPA, at least 45 credits, and be in good standing at RMU (Academic Services, Financial Services, Student Affairs).
