 Endowed and Memorial Scholarships Spring 2018

 

Alan H. Brill Facial Plastic Surgery Scholarship - $500

To be awarded to a "turn-around student", who has changed course and overcome significant obstacles in order to pursue his/her education. Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above.

 W. Ben Nesbit Scholarship - $500

This scholarship is given in honor of Dr. Ben Nesbit, SVHS Principal 1977-1992. It is awarded to a student graduating from Spring Valley who is the son or daughter of a faculty or staff member of Richland School District Two. The student must have a strong school and personal record in academics and in school or community activities.

 Dr. Gregory C. Owings-$500

This scholarship is given in honor of Dr. Greg Owings who served as Principal of SVHS from 1999 to 2012.  The recipient must have a 3.0 or higher GPA, must be accepted to and attending the University of South Carolina

 Wes Brown Memorial Scholarship - $1,000

This scholarship is given in memory of Wesley R. Brown, a 1997 graduate of Spring Valley HS and a 2001 graduate of the University of South Carolina. Wes enjoyed all sports including his four years playing football for Spring Valley and was an avid USC fan. Applicants should have a "B" or above average, have participated as an athlete, a cheerleader, a trainer or manager, or have other involvement with student athletics, be accepted and planning to attend USC, and need financial assistance.

 Ashley Nicole Dent Math & Science Memorial Scholarship - $1,000

This scholarship is given in memory of Ashley Dent, a Discovery student at SVHS in 2006, who died during her Junior year. Ashley was an Honors student, Varsity soccer player and lettered in cross country. Ashley's infectious smile and love of life was evident to all who knew her. Ashley planned to major in medicine and her goal was to be an orthopedic surgeon. Applicants should be highly motivated students, planning to major in Math or Science, have a "B" or above average and are active in sports. Scholarship will be paid directly to the university the recipient attends.

 Matthew Ryan Jones Memorial Scholarship - $1,000

Matt was a 1999 SVHS graduate who died at age 20 after a courageous life-long struggle with cystic fibrosis. Despite many challenges, he valiantly pursued his goals and dreams and attended Clemson University before his death. Applicants must be: highly motivated students, unable to attend college without financial assistance and be accepted at either Clemson or USC. $500 will be awarded for each semester of the recipient's 1st year of school and will be paid directly to the University.

 Wendy Noel Lippincott Memorial Scholarship - $1000 

This scholarship is given in memory of Wendy N. Lippincott who graduated from SVHS and attended Clemson University before her death. Any female student who will attend Clemson University, has a "B" or above average, is active in sports and school activities and has not received other scholarships is eligible. The applicant need not be in the top part of her class or have financial need.

 Stefanie Martin Memorial Scholarships- $1000

These two scholarships are in memory of Stefanie Martin, a 2014 SVHS graduate.  Stefanie had an accident, which resulted in a major back injury but was still determined to run on the SVHS cross country and track team.  Stefanie was a freshman at Clemson University when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.  She passed away 3 months later.  The recipient must have a GPS of 3.5 or higher, plans to continue their education at a community college, a technical or trade school or a 4- year college and has dealt with a hardship or major difficulty in their life.  Examples of this are major illness or injury, family hardships, immigration from a different country, losing a loved one, etc.  The candidate is expected to write an essay about this hardship and how he/she dealt with it.

 Ethel McDuffie Overton Lea Memorial Scholarships-$1000

This scholarship was established by Dr. Jim Overton's, former member of the SVHS Guidance Department, in memory of his mother, who was an educator. Multiple merit-based $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to individuals who demonstrate a sincere and active commitment to learning, focused extracurricular involvement and unique character. Applicants should submit a copy of an essay used in their college application.

 Zemar D. Roberts Memorial Scholarship - $1,000

Zemar was a 2002 Spring Valley HS graduate who was a Student Government Officer and played in the Viking Band. He graduated from college while serving in the Navy and Marines. After completing his military service he continued to serve his country as an employee of the Veteran's Administration. In all aspects of his life, Zemar's infectious smile and upbeat spirit were his trademarks. This scholarship is given in his memory by former teachers and friends to be awarded to a student who demonstrates leadership qualities and perseverance in overcoming significant obstacles in order to pursue his/her education. Applicants must have 1) a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA, 2) participated in one or more extracurricular activities at SVHS, 3) be accepted to and planning to attend 2 or 4-year college or university, and 4) demonstrate the need for financial assistance.

 J. Corey Stringfellow Art and Writing Scholarship Fund-$1,000

This scholarship is given in honor of Corey Stringfellow, a student at SVHS, who died in 2013 at the end of his sophomore year.  Corey was an A-B student with a unique talent for art and writing.  The recipient must have a GPA of 3.0 or above, be active in sports, enjoy writing and plan to major in Art Studio, Graphic Design or a similar field of study.

 Eddie Benton Memorial Scholarship- $1000

This scholarship was started as a way to honor the memory of Eddie Benton, A SVHS graduate and employee with the Richland School District Two Maintenance Department for nearly 30 years.  Applicant must plan to attend a Technical College or Trade School and have a 2.0 GPA or higher and be of good character.
