Alternate Login to Google Apps

On May 15th 2014 Google introduced some new security features that disabled the ability to login using an alternative login link which strongly impacts our Alumni community. The changes by Google are designed to make your online experience safer however they have necessitated that we alter how our users access their Smoogle account. Therefore starting from May 28th 2014 access will be granted using your Smith email address and Google password. You can then login from any Google page that has a sign-in button in the top right corner or from mail.rhsmith.umd.edu.

Unfortunately the ramifications of the changes that Google had made were not publicized ahead of time so we were unable to plan and implement a new solution prior to the new update so we are working to quickly implement this new authentication method.

We apologize for any inconvenience these changes may cause, especially to any Alumni who were using the alternate login link. We cannot bring forward the change over date due to finals that are occurring in the next two weeks. Nor can we delay the change until the fall semester as existing Alumni will need access to their accounts well before then.

When we make the switch on May 28th Alumni who were using the alternate login link can login immediately as you already have a Google password and will be able to use. You will be able to set and choose a new password from within your Smoogle account using the same processes as anyone with a consumer level account.

See this page for more information on the changes.

The instructions below were effective prior to May 16th 2014 and will be removed after the change on May 28th. The alternate login link will point directly to a standard Google login page.

When using a web browser you access your Smoogle account using your University Directory ID and password as described here. However if you're not using a web browser (e.g. perhaps using are using a smartphone app, an email client such as Thunderbird or Outlook) then you need to set a Google password on your account that you use along with your Smith email address to login.

Normally you'd use your UM Directory ID and password when accessing on the web, but if for some reason (e.g. an internet outage or other technical issue occurs) you are unable to authenticate with your Directory ID, you can use this link below to login to Google Apps using your Smith email address and Google password

Once you're logged in, just choose the Google service you want to use!

Note that if you login using this method and check the box to Stay signed in then you must be aware that closing your web browser will not log you out. You must manually sign out by clicking your account photo or email address in the top right hand corner and selecting Sign out. See this article from the Google support site.

Note to Alumni

When you graduate from the Business School the University generally keeps your University Directory ID active for 270 days (~9 months), after which your University account is disabled. If you had been using your University Directory ID to login to your Smoogle account via the web you will need to switch to using the alternative login prior to that cut off date.
