VISTA Positions

VISTA service:  One year full-time commitment:  VISTA members needed in Binghamton and Elmira!

The over-arching goal of these individual VISTA projects is to improve the health status of low income, uninsured, and predominantly rural residents in South Central New York State. Additionally, each RHSC VISTA project will include strategies to better serve low income military families and veterans in all activities planned, developed and implemented.
  • One year full-time service commitment 
  • VISTA Pre-Service Orientation: prior to service
  • VISTA term runs ONE FULL YEAR 
  • Living Allowance of $12,312  provided during service
  • Education Award of $5730 OR $1500 end of service stipend

Rural Resources Associate with Rural Health Network of South Central New York  (Binghamton, NY)
Summer 2018 - Summer 2019
This VISTA member will work to increase project sustainability through resource development and communications efforts aimed at addressing the adverse health impacts of living in poverty. Additionally, the VISTA member will lead efforts at the Rural Health Network of South Central New York (RHN) educating community members on the realities of living in rural poverty. The member will be responsible for Rural Poverty Simulations and community presentations delivered to targeted audiences, including: health care providers, elected officials, school personnel, and other community members.

Neighborhood Revitalization VISTA with Chemung County Habitat for Humanity (Elmira, NY)
Summer 2018 - Summer 2019
This VISTA will serve with the Chemung County Habitat for Humanity Home Ownership & Home Repair Program and help participants receive the support they need to help them successfully complete the CCHFH Program and break the cycle of poverty. The VISTA will help build the capacity of CCHFH by developing a sustainable volunteer recruitment and management system for the Homeowner Support Initiative, and will assist with development of an advisory coalition consisting of representatives from low-income neighborhoods in Chemung County. Coalition members will advise CCHFH leadership concerning proposed community development projects.

Food Access and Development Coordinator (Binghamton, NY): 
August 2018 - August 2019
The Food Access & Development Coordinator VISTA will lead resource development efforts to support FaHN (Food and Health Network) sustainability and a strong regional food system, and provide support to partner organizations engaged in food security and local food access initiatives in an 8 county region of Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga and Tompkins. Development efforts include membership and sponsorship campaigns, fundraising, grant writing, and collaborative resource development with partner organizations to improve food access. The Food Access & Development Coordinator VISTA will play a key role supporting initiatives to reduce food insecurity and improve health through Anti-Hunger Task Force’s, the Summer Food Service Program, Farm to School, Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Programs, and other initiatives. The Coordinator will also assist with updates to the Regional Food System Assessment for South Central NY and research on other critical issues.
