For the last few weeks, the students in English class have been working on identifying bias in nonfiction writing. This unit works hand-in-hand with the Global Studies class, where the students are learning to read like historians. Identifying slanted opinions and analyzing an author's word choice are important skills that skeptical, critical readers use often. In class, the students showed admirable growth in this skill.
Next, the students will begin a unit of study covering Greek mythology, The Odyssey, and analyzing how reader expectation has changed the way stories are told. Once again, this unit pairs nicely with what the students are studying in Global Studies, ancient Greece. This unit will continue from the end of quarter one through much of quarter two.
