In the last two weeks, English classes have wrapped up reading novels with their reading groups. They had final discussions to aid with comprehension of the texts, which is one of the main goals of the unit. Now, the students have begun analyzing the texts they read by comparing the book to the traits of dystopian societies. For example, the students have discussed whether or not the group in control of the society uses propaganda to control the citizens. This analysis has lead to deep, thoughtful conversations about the text. In the last week of March, the students will present their analyses to their classes in a Google Slideshow.
In our next unit, the students will be reading poetry and analyzing it deeply once again. The unit will conclude with a short written response. Afterward, the students will move into a brief unit in which we will read "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe and study his use of dramatic irony in building suspense.
