In February, students finished our One Book, One School unit on Bystander by James Preller. The unit ended with a Socratic Seminar, which gave students an opportunity to voice their honest feelings about the book in a forum designed for academic discussion. It was very interesting to hear the spectrum of opinions on the book, all of which were thoughtful and supported by textual evidence.
In the next unit, which will last to the end of March, students will focus on their own personal reading books. The essential question for this unit is, “What do good readers do?” All of the students will be learning new reading comprehension skills and applying them to their own reading. As well, there will be a journaling component that students will complete during class. All students are expected to read inside and outside of class, totaling at least 2 hours per week.
