Following Spring Break, the students have analyzed poetry by Robert Frost and Langston Hughes. Using about a week of class time, the students annotated a poem and led discussions about the texts based on their own questions and interpretations of the poems. Then, they learned about point of view and perspective in writing and tried to apply those concepts to the poems, which was a rigorous task. In the end, the students showed growth in their abilities to analyze and interpret poetry.
In the next two weeks, we will be reading a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Cask of Amontillado". While we read it, we will analyze the strategies that Poe employed to build suspense within the text. Upon the conclusion of this unit, we will move into Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare.
