This Week & Upcoming Events

Hello Fabulous Fourth Grade Families!

This Friday is the Annual Fun Run - We will be running at 9:40am. Remember that people can donate/pledge online as well as on the paper forms I sent home. I don't know if they still need volunteer help - you can call Crystal or Margaret in the Main Office and ask!

We are finishing up Unit 1 in our math curriculum (whoop whoop!). Hopefully you all saw the review I sent home last Thursday as part of the homework packet. If you haven't, please ask your student to go over it with you.

Conferences are coming up! October 30th - November 3rd. If you have not yet scheduled a conference, I will be sending home a time for you tomorrow. If that time doesn't work, either write a note on that sheet & send it back, email me to reschedule, or call Crystal in the Office to schedule one.

Keep working on those Inventerprise Projects! These are due NOVEMBER 1st. I had said Nov. 2nd earlier forgetting that that is a Conferences Day so there is no school. My bad.

Have a great day!

Sad News

posted Oct 9, 2017, 10:05 AM by Alex Spreier

Unfortunately, I received notification from the district that, effective Nov. 27, classroom pets will no longer be allowed in Redmond School District classrooms. This means that Smaug, our lovable bearded dragon, will be going home with me this Friday. This is just a heads up in case your student comes home talking about this today.

Our First Month-Long Homework Project - Inventerprise!!!

posted Sep 29, 2017, 2:59 PM by Alex Spreier

Hey Fabulous Fourth Grade Families!

Today I assigned the first of our month-long homework projects today - the 2017 Inventerprise. The theme this year is "Where do you want to go and how will you get there? Get moving and invent or improve the way we travel."  The below image shows some of the hints and ideas provided in the packet.

This homework project is required and is due on NOVEMBER 2ND. The projects will be counted both as a Science grade and a Speaking grade (there will be a classroom presentation). Projects may come in in the form of posters, models, etc. (just not TOO big please).

A reminder, also, that the weekly homework folders (the red ones) are due back on THURSDAYS. They will then come home on FRIDAYS. I'm sending home the first of the Weekly Reading Logs this week. My expectation is that your child is reading 20 minutes every day. Of the 10 boxes on the Weekly Reading Record I want a minimum of 6 filled out when they are given back to me on Thursday.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Open House and Picture Day

posted Sep 21, 2017, 10:15 AM by Alex Spreier   [ updated Sep 21, 2017, 10:16 AM ]

You should see these come home today, but Thursday, Sept. 28th, is our Open House. It starts at 6pm and ends at 7pm. There are two sessions you can attend (for those with multiple students this allows you to meet with all teachers).

Also, Friday Sept. 29th is Picture Day! I sent home the picture packet last week. If you haven't seen it yet, or need a replacement, have your student ask me for a new one.

End of Year~!

posted Jun 7, 2017, 3:23 PM by Alex Spreier

Can you believe it's the end of the year already? It felt like I blinked and it's over.

Next week, please make sure to send some extra bags with your student on Thursday and Friday as we will be cleaning out the classroom (desks and cubbies) those days.

Field Day is Tuesday the 13th starting at 1:15.

The Variety Show will be Thursday the 15th at 9:15 am. The entire 4th grade will be opening the Variety Show with a song.

Our last day, Friday the 16th, will be a half-day. Students will be released at 12:35pm.

Monthly Projects - State Reports

posted Mar 2, 2017, 9:38 AM by Alex Spreier

We are starting our next monthly project. Your student will be learning about a state through a research packet. They will then be designing and creating a parade-style float to inform the class about their state. This float should be no bigger than a cereal or shoe box. This project will be due April 3rd. I will be sending home a letter giving more detail later today. Check the attached images for example floats!

Monthly Projects

We are starting our Monthly Research Projects!!! The first up is researching a famous person. These handouts will be coming home Monday but I wanted to give you and your student a chance to discuss and choose a famous person they'd like to research. This poster will be due February 28th.

Fall Writing Sample

posted Nov 7, 2016, 11:15 AM by Alex Spreier

Hello Fabulous 4th Grade Families!

Every year the 4th grade teachers have to set a goal for ourselves in regards to our students' learning. This year we are focusing on using evidence from texts to support our opinions in writing. The writing sample I am sending home today is the initial part of this assessment. The students read two articles and watched a video. The used a graphic organizer to write down important facts & details from the articles and video. Then they used these notes to write an opinion essay on School Lunches vs Home Lunches. The scores will be low because this was a pre-test - we will be spending the rest of the year learning how to properly use sources to provide evidence for our opinions. We will do this again in the Winter and in the Spring. My goal for each and every student is to show growth over the course of the year. If you have any questions feel free to email or Dojo message me. Thanks!

Inventerprise Reminder!

posted Oct 24, 2016, 8:03 AM by Alex Spreier

The Inventerprise deadline is rapidly approaching!

  • All 4th grade students are to participate—this is a required, not optional, part of your student’s homework. Science and speaking grades will be assigned.
  • This is due this Thursday, October 27th.

Here are the details, one more time:

What: Students are asked to invent new or improved school buildings, furnishings, learning tools, technology, playing fields, or anything else that impacts their education.

When: Projects are due, to our classroom, on Thursday, October 27th.

How: Students will have the full month (less than a week now) to brainstorm, create, produce and prepare their project. The end goal is a presentation to me and their classmates. This presentation must include a visual piece (ie, drawings, science board, poster board, powerpoint, etc) and an oral presentation (speech).

I am very open and flexible to any type of presentation, as long as it is clear that the child has done and understands the work.  Help and support is wonderful, but this project needs to be the students.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Notes, emails, and phone calls are all fine. Many of you have also taken advantage of the messaging option through Classdojo, which is my favorite means of communication as I can receive and respond to the these messages at any time, from anywhere.
