Carl Serrani - National Federation of High School Sports Section One Coach of the Year
West Rutland School girls' varsity basketball coach, Carl Serrani, received the 2010 Northeast Sectional Coach of the Year. The Northeast section includes the states of Vermont, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. The award is on behalf of the NFHA Coaches Association, which is the official National Coaches Association of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NHFS). All sectional coaches are considered for National Coach of the Year in their sport.
Coach Serrani received this award based on his ongoing commitment to girls' high school basketball and the
commitment to his student athletes and the ongoing improvement, growth and success of his program.
Coach Serrani has received many accolades from the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association, as well as the Marble Valley League, for having a commitment to a program that wins and loses with class, demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship, teaches fundamentals as well as performs at a high level, while teaching life's lessons through sport. Mr. Serrani commits his time fully to the girls' basketball program at West Rutland School, while keeping the whole experience in perspective.
Coach Serrani has been the girls' varsity basketball coach for 13 years and is in charge of the basketball program grades 5-12. During his tenure he has won 158 games, second only to the legendary Frank Hinchey. He is the only coach with more than 150 wins and also a winning percentage greater than 50%. He has been to four Final Fours and won two State Championships, while having seven winning seasons, again, second only to Frank Hinchey. Coach Serrani coached the Twin State team in 2007, has won two Marble Valley League Coach of the Year awards, won the Division 4 Vermont Basketball Association Coach of the Year in 2009-2010, and was the recipient of the Bernie Cieplicki/Bob Bershaw Award in 2003 given to the coach who demonstrates exceptional commitment and sportsmanship.
Congratulations to Carl Serrani!
