What is it?
  • Google Apps is a Google product designed to serve the education community. It is a robust service offering that includes: E-mail, Calendaring, and web-based: Word Processing, Spread Sheets, Presentations, Forms and lastly the ability to create robust web sites. All of this packaged in a secure domain environment with large storage and completely free. 
  • What is Rancho's Google Apps? It is a pilot set-up in the Fall of 2007 approved by Principal Varda Levy designed to test its capabilities. It was deployed to students in science and social sciences to test its possibilities. 
  • Since that time, other professionals in our school and in our district have joined the pilot to further explore what is possible for teachers, students, administration and professional groups. 
What has it been used for?
  • Student Blogs - 12th Grade English, 9th Grade English Honors, Academic Earth Science, Biology, ELD 1-4
  • Student Web site creation - Academic Earth Science, ELD 1-4
  • Student applications: Word Processing, Presentations, Spreadsheets
  • Teacher team collaboration
  • Teacher information and administration

  • Google Document editor You can now hide the title bar above the editor by choosing View -> Compact controls or pressing Ctrl Shift F  - try it you will like it.

  • Official Google Docs Blog Always full of surprises... check it out at:  http://googledocs.blogspot.com/ Just as a small example - they have added OCR to file conversion - which means you can now "OCR" pdf files!  Think about the implication! :)

  • Google Docs -> Translate You can now translate Google Apps Documents to just about any language... Create your document then go to "Tools" then to "Translate Document."  It will ask you for a name for the translated copy and ask you what language you want it translated to - like: Arabic, Vietnamese, Spanish, Chinese, Swahili, etc.  This has a lot of promise with the diverse populations in our schools it gives teachers another tool to connect with students and parents.

  • Google Wave now in Apps! Well it is here!  Google Wave has been integrated with Google Apps - so I just turned it on in our domain!  A couple of our super users have been alerted - let see what this portion of our pilot does this year!Google Apps: A fully interactive/cooperative cloud-enabled applications environment for our school: Word Processing, Presentation Software, Spread Sheets + Graphing, Drawing, Web creation, Forms, Mail, Calendar, and now Wave!  Incredible foresight...

  • Drag & Drop Dragging and dropping files is an easy way to save time in Gmail. We’ve previously blogged about dragging files to upload as attachments and dragging images into new messages. Now, if you're using Google Chrome, you can also drag attachments out of messages you receive to save them to your computer.

  • Google Sites Templates Google announced this week: "Today, we’re happy to simplify the site creation process even further with the introduction of the Google Sites template gallery. When you select a template from the new Sites template gallery, your new site will come setup with custom page layouts, links for navigating to each page, embedded gadgets, themes and much more."
