Below is an informational slide presentation to see if you are interested. We are grateful that our school board and the state provide these opportunities for students. For accurate annual dates check the links to VDOE but understand that we have local deadlines to meet for our World Language Applicants and Arts students applying to SRGS who may have to participate in local adjudications in December as well as state judging in January. World Language Academy Guidlines pull down:

All nominees to the World Languages Academies must meet the eligibility requirements below.

Eligible students:

· must be juniors or mature sophomores during the current school year, 2020-2021;

· must not have graduated before the opening of the Academy;

· must be eligible to attend public school in Virginia tuition free

· must be nominated by a public high school from a Virginia public school division or by an accredited private school;

· may apply to only one Governor’s summer residential program or World language academy per year;

· may attend only one Governor’s summer residential program or World language academy during their high school career; and

· must be genuinely interested in attending the Virginia Governor’s World Language Academies and have the physical stamina as well as emotional maturity, stability, and self-discipline to live away from home for an extended period.

Students applying to the Japanese Academy must have completed at least level two of ANY world language prior to the beginning of the Academy but are not required to have previously studied Japanese. Students currently studying Japanese are also encouraged to apply. No testing is required.

Students applying to the Latin Academy must have completed at least level two of Latin prior to the beginning of the Academy. Testing is required.

Students of the French, German, and Spanish Academies must meet the additional criteria below.

Eligible students:

  • must have completed at least level three of the language prior to the beginning of the Academy;

  • must have developed good proficiency in using this language; and

  • must be willing to use the target language for all social and academic interactions.The applications for the Governor's World Language Academies are completely online. For RCHS students they are due December 3, 2021 to eseeley@rappahannockschools.us.

  • Beth Seeley, eseeley@rappahannockschools.us is the principal's designee and can help with any step of the way or find help.

  • Make sure the people writing your recommendations understand the process is completely online. You have to give them RCHS dates. 2020 is the first time we are using the Survey Monkey Application, so check on them and don't be afraid to ask for help if you have questions. If all parts of the application are not completed, it will not reach the designee.

  • Request your transcript from Mrs. Pond, dpond@rappahannockschools.us.

  • Testing is included for all 3 academies. This has to be arranged by RCHS in mid-December. Contact the designee if there are problems.

  • Local deadlines are not sent from the state's application process.

  • Students whose families speak a language, but the students themselves do not speak fluently may apply to a Language Academy for that language.

CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY

The following criteria must be met for a student to be eligible for consideration for the Governor's School program as indicated:

A. In the academic programs and the mentorship programs, a student must be identified as gifted priopr to or as a result of this application process. If a student has been identified through the local division identification process, the score on the achievement or aptitude/ability measure used in the identification process may be used as one of the two required norm-referenced tests, regardless of the age at which the test was taken. The second required score must come from a norm-referenced achievement or aptitude/ability measure administered within the past three years.

B. In the visual and performing arts programs, a student must be identified as gifted in an arts area prior to or as a result of this application process. In addition, each applicant must participate in the adjudication process in January as scheduled by VDOE. To plan your timing and see if there are problems with weather, check this site.

C. A student must be neither a current applicant to a 2021 Governor's World Language Academy or other Summer Residential Governor’s School, nor a former participant in these programs. A student may attend only one World Language Academy or other Summer Residential Governor’s School program during his or her high school career.

E. A student must be genuinely interested in attending the Governor's School and have the emotional maturity, stability, and self-discipline to live away from home for an extended period.

F. A student must be eligible for a free, public education in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Information is usually updated in October at the state level.

  • Students must apply and show they are eligible.

  • Depending on the academy and the number of students applying, applications due dates vary but final applications are due to schools as determined.

  • When you decide you want to apply complete the survey or check with RCHS gifted specialist and/or guidance if you have questions.

  • Applications can be found at the VDOE website.

  • Applications for other programs are due in January the year of the program.
