Computer Education Curriculum Highlights


Kindergarten

  • Understand what a computer is and parts of computer

  • Move a mouse accurately

  • Locate enter, delete/backspace, space bar, shift keys on a keyboard

  • Log on and off computer

  • Use components of a computer system, related vocabulary and grade appropriate software

Grade 1

  • Demonstrate basic computer skills and use grade appropriate software.

  • Identify the basic dos and don’ts of using a computer

  • Understand the relative position of keys on a keyboard

  • Properly use the shift, space bar, return/enter, delete/backspace and punctuation keys

  • Use informal keyboarding skills to type words and sentences

Grade 2

  • Correctly use components of a computer system, related vocabulary and grade appropriate software.

  • Use informal keyboarding skills to type words, phrases, sentences and paragraphs.

  • Become more familiar with location of keys on keyboard and begin keyboarding with speed and accuracy

Grade 3

  • Use formal keyboarding skills to learn letter key positions

  • Access and use a standard word processing program to create, edit, apply formatting, and print documents

  • Access on-line information sources including pre-selected web sites and searchable databases

Grade 4

  • Use formal keyboarding skills to learn letter key positions

  • Use application software including a standard word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation program

  • General technology awareness including organizing and managing files

  • Use technology to access and transmit information

Grade 5


Grade 6

  • review and reinforce technology skills and knowledge of students acquired at the elementary level

  • Word processing is emphasized. Students will also explore the use of the computer network to access various research and curriculum-based programs needed for integrated curricular projects.

  • Effective & appropriate use of the internet and other digital technology is stressed and emerging technologies are also discussed. Whenever possible basic business knowledge is also incorporated into our projects.

Grade 7

  • Students in the seventh grade course will expand their knowledge and expertise through a more formal study of computer operating systems, the Internet, and contemporary computer applications.

  • This is an introduction to coding and computer science by way of making and design, using the micro:bit microcontroller board, and Microsoft's MakeCode block-based coding environment. It is a project-based curriculum with a maker philosophy at its core; the idea is that by making physical objects, students create a context for learning the coding and computer science concepts.

  • The overall goal is to prepare all students to use computer technology effectively & appropriately at the middle & high school levels.

Grade 8

  • reinforce the knowledge and skills acquired in the seventh grade and to further advance the student's technology skills and knowledge.

  • students will be working with App Inventor 2, an introductory course in programming skills.  It is a free, cloud based development tool that allows newcomers to computer programming to create software applications (apps).  We will be introduced to computer programming by creating working apps for Androids.

  • The overall goal is to prepare all students to use computer technology effectively & appropriately at the high school level and beyond.
