How do we change the fact that seven out of ten students are leaving high school without adequate writing skills?

How do we get students to see the importance writing can play in their adult lives?

How do we get students to understand that the hard work and frustration that comes with learning how to write well is worth it?

In this workshop, Kelly Gallagher will help participants to reflect on these guiding questions as they learn to embed the Common Core writing standards in their classrooms.  Additionally, Kelly will help ELA teachers to consider moving beyond these standards so that students are stretched even more.  Topics covered in this workshop will include:
  • reflecting on Common Core writing standards
  • emphasis on argument and informative / explanatory writing
  • motivating adolescent writers
  • using writing models in the classroom
  • moving students beyond fake school writing
  • teaching writers to recognize audience and purpose
  • using assessment to better drive student writing
  • teaching writing in the Age of Google
