Paradise Valley Unified School District Goals and Objectives

Objective 1 - 
Implement a balanced assessment system (including diagnostic, formative and summative assessments) to design and align curriculum and adjust instruction to evaluate and enhance student progress.
  • Strategy 1 Provide curriculum maps in English/Language Arts, math, social studies, science, physical education, fine arts, and world language that enhance individual student progress.
    • Action Steps
      • Implement  K-12 standard-aligned English/Language Arts, math, social studies, science, physical education, fine arts, and world language curriculum maps to include essential vocabulary, resources, and activities that manage, improve, and adjust instruction to enhance individual student progress.
    • Status
      • English/Language Arts - K-12 Maps with Common Core aligned literature suggestions are complete.
      • Social Studies K-8 and high school (World History, American History, American Government) are complete in draft form.  Social Studies Literacy Maps aligned to the Common Core for Grades 6-high school are complete.
      • Science - Grades 4, 8, and HS Biology maps are complete in draft form.
      • PE - Grades K-12 maps are complete in draft form.
      • Fine Arts - Grades K-12 maps are complete in draft form.
      • World Language maps are complete in draft form for all levels (Readiness to Proficiency).
    • Meaningful Measures of Success
      • Continued development of curriculum maps.
      • Creation and administration of K-12 benchmark assessments.
      • Development of support structures for creation and implementation of curriculum maps.
      • Design and delivery of professional development in managing and creating curriculum maps.
  • Strategy 2 Review and revise course offerings K-12 to align with the vision of COMPASS 2015.
    • Action Steps
      • Review and revise curriculum/courses in English/Language arts, social studies, science, physical education, fine arts, and world language to ensure alignment with district curriculum maps, adjust learning pathways, and develop course sequencing that enhances student success.
    • Status
      • The annual production of the high school course catalog provides opportunities for changes to curriculum offerings.
      • The production of the Middle School Registration Guide has ceased, as its function was no longer needed.
      • The number middle school math courses has been reduced in order to create consistency of curriculum offerings and pathways district-wide. 
      • The Director of Curriculum approves all new course requests K-12.
      • The curriculum Department and Technology Department are working together to audit the high school master course list, determining active and inactive status in Infinite Campus.
      • pvONLINE offers over 100 courses K-12.
    • Meaningful Measures of Success
      • Revise 7-12 curriculum/course offerings in high school/middle schools.
Objective 2 - Embed 21st Century skills including the Arizona Technology Standards as appropriate within the curriculum while ensuring equitable access to all learners.
  • Strategy 1 - Integrate 21st Century Skills and Arizona Technology Standards through alignment with curriculum maps in English/Language Arts, social studies, science, physical education, fine arts, and world languages.
    • Action Steps
      • Continue to identify and integrate Century Skills and AZ Technology Standards in curriculum maps.
    • Status
      • 21st Century Skills and AZ Technology Standards are embedded in skill statements within the maps.  As schools develop Consensus maps and extend content, extension activities for 21st Century Skills and technology standards are identified and integrated.
    • Meaningful Measures of Success
      • Maps include integration of 21st Century Skills and AZ Technology Standards.
  • Strategy 2 Provide access to activities and resources supporting student engagement in 21st Century Skills and Arizona Technology Standards through alignment with curriculum maps in English/Language Arts, social studies, science, physical education, fine arts, and world languages.
    • Action Steps
      • Continue to Identify activities and resources that support student engagement in 21st Century Skills and the AZ Technology Standards in curriculum maps, making them accessible to all learners.

      • District-wide adopted resources are aligned to curriculum maps.
    • Meaningful Measures of Success
      • Maps include identified activities and resources for integration of 21st Century Skills and AZ Technology Standards.
Objective 3 - Implement 'Best Practices' from a wide range of research-based instructional strategies, including traditional and innovative sources, to productively engage all learners and provide multiple pathways of learning.
  • Strategy 1 - Provide a variety of options for student learning with curriculum content and delivery, focusing on K-12 STEM curriculum and online learning in elementary schools.
    • Action Steps
      • Create and implement a variety of pathways and engagement options to enhance student success with a growing emphasis on K-12 STEM curriculum and online learning in elementary schools.
    • Status
      •  CREST – Paradise Valley High School
      • Explorer Middle School, Whispering Wind Academy, and Foothills Elementary have a specific focus on STEM curriculum.
      • pvONLINE curriculum includes grades K-8.
      • pvONLINE curriculum is used in blended learning environments at the school sites.
      • pvONLINE gifted/honors curriculum for Math and English/Language Arts is in development for grades 3-6.
      • pvONLINE curriculum includes Credit Recovery courses for all four years of English, American History, and American Government for students needing to repeat courses for credits.
      • pvONLINE curriculum includes 5 AP courses and 2 Honors level math courses. 
      • Students are able to earn their high school diploma with pvONLINE.
      • Conversations with Rio Salado are underway to provide online dual enrollment for English and Math
    • Meaningful Measures of Success
      • Increased STEM educational opportunities K-12.
      • Increased opportunities for online learning K-8.

      • Provide curriculum resources to support best practices in instruction.
    • Status
      • A district-wide committee has provided recommendations about future practices for district level curriculum resource adoptions.  Recommendations include
        • There is not a pre-determined sequence for future adoptions.
        • The decision for a content-are adoption will be based on demonstrated need.  This will be evidenced by:
          • Multiple data sources including but not limited to changes in standards, curriculum maps, research, assessment results.
          • An audit of current resources and how they may be repurposed for curriculum needs.

      • Identify and distribute curriculum resources to support best practices in instruction.
