PUTNAM VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL

Guidance Notes

November 19th 2018

Greetings from Guidance!

The 1st Quarter of the academic year is over and we hope you are pleased with how your grades turned out. In case you are not, now is the time to turn things around.  No matter where you are in your high school journey, the grades you earn will play a big role in what sort of opportunities will be available to you after high school.  If you need help finding additional extra-help resources beyond staying after school with your teachers, let your counselor know. We are here to help!

Seniors:

At this point, almost 1/2 of you have applied to college already and some of you have even been accepted. We congratulate you on your efficiency!  If you have not yet applied, that should be fine, as long as you are doing so under regular or rolling admission criteria. If you are planning on applying to any four-year college, you should have everything done by mid December to meet January deadlines.  Please come in and speak with your counselor ASAP!

Don’t forget to send your SAT and/or ACT scores to the colleges you apply to directly from the testing agency.  You can send SAT scores by logging into your collegeboard.org account and you can send ACT scores by logging in at actstudent.org.

Scholarship opportunities come and go each month.  You should visit the “scholarship section” of our website regularly to see if you are eligible for any of these awards.  Your parents will be pleased if you can get even just a few hundred dollars to help pay for college expenses.

Juniors:

As we start to wrap things up with our seniors, we are already looking ahead to getting the Class of 2020 ready for the college admissions process. We will start to meet with our Juniors individually and will continue to do so through the remainder of the school year.  If you would like to meet with your counselor before we call you, just stop by and make an appointment.

Common wisdom states that the Junior year is the most important year for college admissions and common wisdom has this one right!  It is imperative that you are working to your full potential in all of your classes. The grades you earn this year will be the first thing college admissions counselors look at when reviewing your transcript.  You should also be cognizant (SAT word) of how your extracurricular activities affect your chances at admission.  If your resume’ is sparse, get involved with something!

The SAT’s and ACT’s are on the horizon and now is a good time to think about when you are going to take your first college entrance exam. Most Juniors will do so in May or June, but those of you who are taking AP exams in May and SAT Subject Tests in June should consider taking the March (SAT) or  February (ACT) administrations. Check in with your counselor if you have questions about what you should do.

Looking ahead, there will be a college fair on Wednesday, May 1st, 2019 during the day at the Yorktown BOCES Campus.  We will transport interested students who hand in their permissions forms on time. The form will be made available sometime during the Spring.  There is also a night fair on 5/1/19 at Fox Lane High School that parents can attend with their kids. Specific information will regarding this fair will also be made available in the Spring.

Sophomores:

Our advice is similar to that of the junior class… Make sure you are doing your best in your classes and that you are involved with at least one after school activity.  In just two years, most of you will be in the midst of applying to college and you want to be able to compete with other applicants from around the state, nation and indeed the world.  Be prepared!

Also, in the very near future the counselors will be introducing 10th graders to Naviance and helping them complete a career interest inventory.

Freshmen:

We enjoyed meeting you at our Freshmen Lunch Bunch and we thought it was a huge success!  Virtually the entire Freshmen Class participated in this outstanding program! We certainly feel that we know you guys better and hopefully you feel the same towards us.  This was a great way to start off this very important relationship that will last throughout your high school career and beyond. Remember that we are here to help and we love it when students just stop by to say hi.  We hope to see you again soon!

Sincerely,

Mr. Campion     Mrs. Davino      Mrs. Kilduff
