PUTNAM VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL

Guidance Notes

April 2019

Greetings from Guidance!

With only one quarter to go, we would like to encourage all of our students to finish the year strong and have a great time doing it.  We have wrapped up meetings with all of our students to pick classes for next year, but if you change your mind about a particular class, make sure you see your counselor. We will be mailing home student course requests at the beginning of May.  Parents, please review these courses with your son/daughter and let us know if you want to make any changes.

Seniors:

By now, you should have received word from all of the colleges you applied to.  You must have your deposit in to the college you plan to attend by May 1st, but we recommend sending it in no later than April 26th.  Please update your Naviance account so that we can keep track of acceptance.  Please also inform your counselor about your college plans. Scholarships are still available on the guidance website and as always we encourage students to apply to as many as possible.  Every dollar counts!

Juniors:

Many of you will be attending the Spring College and Career Fair at BOCES in Yorktown on May 1st.  This is a great way to start networking with colleges and making that first impression. Parents, there is also a college fair at Fox Lane High School in Bedford on May 1st from 6-9 PM. The program provides an opportunity to speak to college representatives and to attend workshops and presentations.  Further information can be found on the guidance website, including a list of colleges that will be in attendance. We encourage all juniors to continue visiting colleges through the next several months to create their final list.  Please make sure that you are registered to take an SAT and/or an ACT this spring. Be mindful of registration deadlines.

Sophomores:

Many of you will be attending the Spring College and Career Fair at BOCES in Yorktown on May 1st. This is a great way to start networking with colleges and making that first impression. Parents, there is also a college fair at Fox Lane High School in Bedford on May 1st from 6-9 PM. The program provides an opportunity to speak to college representatives and to attend workshops and presentations.  Further information can be found on the guidance website, including a list of colleges that will be in attendance.

We recently introduced you to Naviance and you completed a career interest survey.  You can use the results of this test to research occupations and college majors that you might be interested in pursuing.  We encourage all sophomores to start visiting colleges at this point.

Freshmen:

We have enjoyed getting to meet with our freshmen over the last few weeks.  We have discussed post-secondary plans and future goals. We encourage you to finish up the year on a good note.  It is not too late to bring your grades up and reach out to your teachers for extra support. Feel free to reach out to your counselors should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mr. Campion                Mrs. Davino                Mrs. Kilduff
