State of the PUHSD School Facilities
During the most recent election on November 8, 2016, 90% of all statewide obligation bond measures passed, but not our local Measure L. Measure L, PUHSD’s School Facilities Bond Proposal, received a majority vote of 53.5%, ultimately falling less than 2% short of the required 55% majority required to pass. Had this measure passed, we would have been able to make the infrastructure improvements needed to provide our students with the safe and modern learning spaces they need.
As we move into 2017, Placer Union High School District’s facilities and maintenance challenges continue. Our school sites (Placer, Del Oro, Colfax, Placer School for Adults, and Educational Options Chana/Maidu) are well maintained, however, the majority of our schools are 50 to 100 + years old, and in need of renovation, repair and modernization. Technology upgrades throughout all school sites are required so our students will have the same opportunities to succeed as their peers.
While the outcome of Measure L is disappointing, I am taking this opportunity to reach out to you, our voters, to hear your ideas as to the District’s next steps. What ideas and thoughts do you have to help us create learning environments that will provide our students with the spaces and tools they need to enhance their creative, critical thinking, and collaborative skills?
Please share your ideas with me by responding to our survey. The survey, available on the district website (www.puhsd.us) or here https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RTFYWYW is open-ended; you can let us know in your own words what you would like to see.
PUHSD students need and deserve a competitive edge as they prepare for college and career futures. There’s a lot at stake. Thank you for your past and continued support of our schools, our educators, and our students.
Together in Education,
Dr. George Sziraki
Executive Assistant to the Superintendent
PUHSD Mission Statement:
"Committed to student learning through teaching excellence in a supportive environment."
Dr. Sziraki began his service to Placer Union on July 1, 2013. He brings to the Placer Union team extensive experience in teaching, coaching and administering in a high school setting.
He became Assistant Superintendent of the Merced Union High School District in 2008. While in that position---instituting and directing new initiatives in instructional improvement---the MUHSD showed strong growth in the areas most often cited when measuring quality of school districts.
Dr. Sziraki loves the high school environment, looks forward to the challenges ahead, and will forge forward in addressing the district commitment to student learning by creating supportive environments for students and staff.
