School Year
A Focus on Education Equity

Dear PUHSD Community:

Welcome to the 2017/2018 school year—one that guarantees increased equity and opportunities for our greatest resources—your children, our students.  Our greatest priority is meeting the needs of ALL students.

I know that PUHSD staff continuously work hard to provide a quality education for every student in every classroom.  This year, staff will focus on Equity.  We are committed to educational equity where all decision-makers will be held accountable to ensure that all students attain an excellent education and receive the resources they need to graduate prepared to success after high school.

The classroom teacher is at the forefront of equity for all students.  The goal is to challenge personal assumptions and develop systemic practices in the teaching environment to ensure ALL students—regardless of gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic level—will not fall behind and recognize a willingness to work hard (Growth-Mindset) as one of the most significant factors in learning.

Throughout the PUHSD, we are committed to the philosophy that “All Students Can Learn” and that we embrace an ongoing moral obligation to serve all of our students.  We shall continue to assess the needs of all students while providing quality experiences and enrichment opportunities that will further their college and career preparation.  Via the PUHSD’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) process, students’ needs continue to be determined and prioritized, paired with the allocation of resources to support student learning in core classes, dual college credit opportunities, Career and Technical Education and the Visual and Performing Arts.  All input is valued from our communities and the PUHSD’s plans for action are now specifically targeted towards opening doors for more students and securing safe and engaging learning environments for students and staff.

Plans for a future school facilities General Obligation Bond measure is on the horizon for 2018.  Ninety percent of all statewide general obligation bond measures passed in November of 2016, but, unfortunately, our local PUHSD Measure L did not.  PUHSD students need and deserve a competitive edge and top-notch facilities as we prepared our greatest resources—our students—for college and career.  Passage of a General Obligation Bond outcome will support the PUHSD in fulfilling district and community priorities in the best interests of our students.

As we partner for the future of our children, communication remains a top priority.  At the end of every day, the amount of time and effort we spend on communicating with one another will move us from “Good” to “Great.”  Parent and community input will continue to be valued and sought—both at the school site and district levels.  Please consider how you might participate in helping advance the PUHSD’s Strategic Plan, LCAP, and Facilities.  We each have an obligation to do our best for our greatest resources—children.  It’s a commitment and honor we need to accomplish together.

 Together in Education,

 Dr. George Sziraki
 PUHSD Superintendent

PUHSD Mission Statement:
"Committed to student learning through teaching excellence in a supportive environment."

Dr. Sziraki began his service to Placer Union on July 1, 2013. He brings to the Placer Union team extensive experience in teaching, coaching and administering in a high school setting.

He became Assistant Superintendent of the Merced Union High School District in 2008. While in that position---instituting and directing new initiatives in instructional improvement---the MUHSD showed strong growth in the areas most often cited when measuring quality of school districts.
Dr. Sziraki loves the high school environment, looks forward to the challenges ahead, and will forge forward in addressing the district commitment to student learning by creating supportive environments for students and staff.
