Unit 4 - Cell Structure & Function

Unit 4 - Cells, Membranes, Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

Unit Outcomes:
CELLS

Understand the process of how scientists discovered that cells were the basic unit of life. (The development of the cell theory)

Understand the structure and function of the cell’s membrane

Understand how experiments with artificial membranes have added to our understanding of the structure and function of the plasma membrane.

Understand how molecules move through the cell’s membrane

Understand molecular concentration gradients (hypo, iso and hypertonic)

Understand the structure, shape and function of the major cell organelles

Understand the differences between a virus, a bacteria cell (prokaryote) and a eukaryotic cell

PHOTOSYNTHESIS & RESPRATION

Understand the process of photosynthesis – steps, molecules that go into the reaction, molecules that come out of the reaction and how energy is transferred from sunlight into molecules.

Understand the relationship of light wavelength and light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis.

Understand metabolism in living organisms

Understand the process of cellular respiration – steps, molecules that go into the reaction, molecules that come out of the reaction and how energy is transferred from molecules being systematically broken down.

Understand how the rate of cellular respiration relates to the amount of activity in different cells.
