Before School

Children are to play on the playground in the morning until the bell rings at 8:50.  Our class lines up outside of our classroom and waits for me to open the door.

·         If you are picking up your child, please wait in your car in the east parking lot.

·         If you need to change your usual pick-up plans or require early dismissal, please send a note with your child that morning or send me an email.

Snacks

The kids are allowed to keep a healthy snack in their backpack and eat it outside during recess.  Water bottles are welcome and can be used in the classroom.

Daily Take-Home Folders

Look for a yellow folder to go home daily.  This begins on Monday with Homework for the week (not the first week) as well as any other pertinent information that has to go home or be addressed and brought back.   Thursdays, the folder will include information from the office that ALL Tavelli students get on this day.  Please let me know if a folder does not come home regularly – I will help look into it for you.

Spelling

It is a second grade team decision to not do spelling tests.  We will be using weekly, unit spelling words regularly throughout the curriculum and our focus is on these words as well as all primary Dolch and sight words.

Math and Reading

Your child will be assigned to a math class and reading class this year (IE – Intervention or Enrichment).  These are flexible groups and may change throughout the year.  We hope to assign groups and begin math and reading rotations as soon as we have completed our student assessments.

Homework

Please have your child read at least 20- 30 minute each night.  Once we have established our math groups it will be up to that teacher to determine how much and how often homework will be given.

We will be adjusting homework very soon, so please look out for the packet in the yellow folder.

Birthdays

To celebrate, we will sing “Happy Birthday” and the class will be given an extra recess!  As a grade level we have decide to celebrate with an extra recess rather than with treats.

Book Orders

I love to order books from Scholastic!  You will often find order forms in your child’s Thursday binder.  Please do not feel obligated to order, but if you choose to do so, please see the attached paper on the Scholastic list that includes our class code – I encourage you to order and pay online with this code so that there is no lost or misplaced cash or checks.

Testing

We are in the process of assessment testing, including MAPS, STAR, and DIBELS.  These tests, combined with past data, will help us to determine Reading and math group placement and reading groups for this fall.  Please know that our groups are always flexible and I do not hesitate to move children around to meet their needs.  I will continuously share all test results with you on a regular basis or when requested as well as at our first parent/teacher conference in October.

I truly value our partnership and am looking forward to working with you and your child this year.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
