Jonathan Beale, who kindly spoke to colleagues at our recent Philosophy Meeting, mentioned his talk in his weekly newsletter for CIRL:

The Tony Little Centre for Innovation and Research in Learning

Dear colleagues,

How are increasing knowledge and advancing understanding competing or complementary aims of teaching? This question is taken up by Catherine Z. Elgin, Professor of the Philosophy of Education at Harvard University. Elgin argues that while teaching aims at increasing knowledge, its primary aim is to advance understanding. This week’s blog post discusses Elgin’s argument.

Prof. Elgin will visit Eton in April to give a CIRL and Education Society colloquium.

Calls for Papers

  • Impact is the journal of the Chartered College of Teaching. The journal positions classroom practice alongside research and aims to inform teachers about promising research findings. There is a call for papers for a special issue on social action and character education. Abstracts of 150-250 words are due by 2 December. The aims of Impact align with those of CIRL.
