Welcome to Music Class!

 Dear Parents/Guardians,

This year holds a great deal of exciting and challenging music ahead. Students will be involved in rigorous instruction in music, consisting of standards based instruction relating to the New York City Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. Students will be involved in many musical activities consisting of singing, movement, and playing instruments!

The lower grade students will be focusing on a general music curriculum. Students will be involved in developing the fundamental building blocks of steady beat, pitch, rhythm, form and many more fun topics! Students will work on learning the pitches so, la, mi, re and do, as well as quarter note, eighth note, rest and half note rhythms. Students will learn these concepts through a variety of methods such as singing, movement, playing instruments, and working together! Many styles of music will be studied such as jazz, classical, holiday themed, and multicultural music. Additional resources can be found under "students resources" to help reinforce the concepts taught in class.

The upper grade students will be involved in instrumental programs, mainly focusing on individual pedagogical technique and ensemble practice. Each class has been chosen to either study the violin or guitar for the school year. Students will be given an instrument during class time. Students will learn the fundamentals of basic note reading, rhythm reading and violin or guitar technique. Students will also participate in both peer and self formative assessment where students can help monitor their own progress and their classmates' progress as well. Additional resources for note reading, technique demonstration and music games can be found under the "student resources". With your help, we can get our students on the path to becoming great musicians!
