What is a Balanced School Day?

As you may or may not be aware, Treherne Elementary runs on the balanced school day schedule. A balanced school day operates during the same start/finish times as a regular school day but the blocks of learning time are reworked within this time frame. There is no change to the number of teaching minutes per day, nor to the total number of recess minutes per day, just fewer transition times and increased learning time.

The school is changed from the traditional 2 short recesses, lunch and 1 longer recess to 2 nutrition breaks and activity time. Our balanced day schedule looks like this:

8:45 am                                Bell rings for entry into school

8:55 am                                O Canada and Morning Announcements

9:00 – 10:40 am                Instruction Time

10:40 – 11:10 am               Nutrition Break & Activity Time

11:10 – 12:50 pm               Instruction Time

12:50 – 1:45 pm                 Nutrition Break & Activity Time

1:45 – 3:25 pm                   Instruction Time

3:25 pm                                Bus Students Dismissal

3:30 pm                                Town Students Dismissal

We have noticed significant changes in terms of less behaviour problems, students have a greater ability to concentrate, thus improving their learning and they get longer recess breaks which helps them burn energy so they are able to focus once back in the classroom.
