Reading Apprenticeship is an intensive reading program that has been introduced through Manitoba Education for middle-years and senior-years classrooms. Select schools are part of a three-year pilot program. A common language and reading strategies have been developed among three Prairie Spirit schools, in order to facilitate a successful transition for students between schools and content-area classrooms. The purpose of this program is to teach students specific skills used to read and comprehend a variety of challenging texts.
Students have benefited from using strategies across subject areas, such as: examining roadblocks, questioning, making connections, summarizing, predicting, collecting evidence, inferring, and collaborating ideas in order to increase comprehension. Teachers have seen students’ comfort levels increase while using specific skills. Critical thinking and improved literary engagement has been evident. The Reading Apprenticeship program will continue to grow within Prairie Spirit School Division and will give students the tools to become literate adults.
