New ELA Curriculum

Our existing curricula are updated every few years to reflect new research on how students learn best.  A new English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade 8 students is being released this fall.  Two Prairie Spirit (PSSD) pilot schools (Glenboro School and Nellie McClung Collegiate in Manitou) will be involved in a three-year pilot of this curriculum.  School teams will meet regularly with schools from seven other school divisions to learn about new techniques, try them out in the classroom, and report back.  This pilot is being facilitated by the Manitoba Education ELA consultant.  The rest of our PSSD schools will also be introduced to facets of the curriculum over the next few years.  Curriculum implementation has evolved from the one-day inservice where we used to get a new document and a few hours of instruction.  Now we work with that material over a period of time and with the help of our colleagues to ensure that we can provide a variety of new experiences for our students.  Work has begun to rewrite the Grade 9 to Grade 12 ELA Curriculum.
