AT NMC, CHRISTMAS IS COMING
With less than a week to go until the Christmas holidays, Nellie McClung Collegiate is wrapping things up for 2016.
SWAT recently coordinated a food/toy drive for the local Christmas Cheer Board at the high school, and it all went very well given that three days of canvassing students was lost due to last week’s storm. In the end, the winning class was the grade 11s who tallied 270 points, followed closely by the grade 8s with 263; the grade 10s with 218; the grade 9s with 174; the grade 7s with 146; and in dead last place (again) with ZERO donations, the grade 12s. Thank you sincerely to all those students, parents and staff who made food or monetary donations to help make the community just a little better place for some over the holidays, and to all those who purchased WE products such as rafiki bracelets. This fundraiser, along with SWAT selling Christmas baking at this weeks “Mall in the Hall” allowed the group to make a very generous donation of over $500 towards their global pillar of education (helping build a school) in Ecuador,
In hockey action, the Pembina Tigers got a huge win last week as they beat the Northlands Parkway Nighthawks 3-2. According to Manager Kent Lewarne, “After playing some good hockey recently with nothing to show in the standings, the Tigers got back in the win column on a stormy night in Cartwright. Convinced this game was sure to be postponed, it took some scrambling to get the programs printed in time to head out to Cartwright. There were a few more fans than expected on a blustery night and the hometown crowd got a good one from the boys. Dobson (Carels and Fijala assisting) scored the first Tigers marker on a breakaway to tie the game at one in the first period. Ethan Carels (Dobson) got his first of the evening in the second and the Tigers took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room. NPC bounced back early in the third but Carels (Potter and Fijala) responded at 14:32 and Tigers hung on” for the one goal lead and the win!
In the team’s latest tournament action in Killarney, the ‘Cats had a 1 and 2 record losing 5-4 in OT to Deloraine; 6-4 to Glenboro-Baldur; and defeating Souris 5-1 in the 7th place game. The team returned to Zone IV action Wednesday night in Manitou vs. the Morris Mavericks and play in Altona vs. the WC Miller Aces tonight. Next week is also very busy with games in Pilot Mound on Monday vs. the PCI Trojans and Thursday at noon in Notre Dame vs. the rival Mountain Mustangs in the annual Christmas game. The team currently sits in 7th place, one point ahead of the Mustangs.
Buzz notes: The Sr. boys’ basketball team opens their season this weekend with a tournament in Elm Creek and it appears there will be a 7 & 8 co-ed basketball team as there is student interest in having a team…..Student Council is in the holiday spirit with their candy cane messages and Christmas theme days (ugly Christmas sweater day was Wednesday, while next week it is Santa hat day)…..Finally, at this time the students and staff of Nellie McClung Collegiate would like to thank everyone a Merry Christmas, a joyous holiday season, and a successful 2017!
