This is the project page for the "Puerto Rico Health Information Network" (PRHIN), Puerto Rico's Island-wide HIE project.  This project supported through a grant (Grant ID "90HT0001") received through the Office of the Governor of Puerto Rico from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) of the U.S. federal government.  

 grant is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH), State Health Information Exchange Cooperative Agreement Program.


June 2011
  • PRHIN begins working with Puerto Rico Laboratory Information System (LIS) vendors to prepare groundwork for eLabs.  Return of structured lab-results to be adopted first, followed by electronic orders. 
  • Puerto Rico becoming one of the first jurisdictions to implement "NHIN Direct Messaging" infrastructure to support HIE.  "Direct Messaging" HIE to begin upon availability of health professionals and entities Island-wide directories. 
  • PRHIN begins paperless ePrescribing in Puerto Rico.  State HIT Coordinator to meet with pharmacy payers to coordinate elimination of paper copies during ePrescribing towards end of summer 2011. 
May 2011
  • May 10, 2011 - ONC approves PRHIN's Strategic and Operational Plans (SOP).  Puerto Rico joins States with approved HIE SOP's, narrowing the gap that has traditionally separated the Island from other U.S. jurisdictions with regards to HIT and HIE adoption. 
April 2011
  • PRHIN's Ambulatory CPOE is the first Ambulatory CPOE in the United States to have "Orders Pool" capabilities; allowing orders to be placed without having to define a destination for each order.  ONC to watch PRHIN's orders pool implementation to evaluate its usefulness for other regions in the nation.
