Premier 14U ’01 wins NSA A State

EAST PEORIA — Premier Fastpitch 14U ’01 won the National Softball Associations 2015 Illinois A State Tournament on Sunday. In the championship game, Premier defeated OTBO Explosion in a decisive 6-0 win in the weather-shortened tournament at EastSide Center in East Peoria.

Kia Hanner pitched a no-hitter, striking out four, one walk in seven innings. Zoie Bowman had two hits. Makenzie Reedy, Jaden Corley, Macey McElravy, Hanner and Peyton Melton each had hits.

Game recaps

In pool play PF ’01 fell 18-1 to Heartland Havoc on Friday. Bowman had two hits and two RBIs. Cami Newbanks and McElravy each had a pair of hits. Grace Trello, Corley and Reedy also had a hit each.

PF’01 defeated OTBO Explosion 7-4 in pool play also on Friday. Dayna Kennedy hit a home run and a double. Bowman and Bailey Davis each doubled. McElravy had three hits.

McElravy earned the win, striking out one, no walks, nine hits, three runs.

A sixth inning rally sparked a 9-3 win over Quad City Firebirds for PF’01. Newbanks had a double and a single with Davis, McElravy, Bowman, Kennedy and Hanner each had a hit. Reagan Miller scored two runs and hit a single.

In bracket play, PF’01 defeated Illinois Stars 2-1 on Saturday. Newbanks had two hits while Hanner went seven innings, struck out eight, walked one, seven hits, one earned run for the win. Peyton Melton scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Reedy.

PF’01 made the most of three hits in a 3-2 victory over the Bloomington Angels in the semi-final on Sunday. Newbanks had a double while Bowman had two singles. McElravy pitched four innings, four hits, one earned run, one walk, one strikeout.

PF ’01 is coached by Tip Reedy and Bill Corley and is to travel to Normal for the BNGSA Meatheads Firecracker Tournament this weekend.

Based in Mattoon, Premier Fastpitch began as one team in the fall of 2011. The organization now fields two 18U teams, a 16U and two 14Us. The ’01 players are from Charleston, Decatur, Forsyth, Hammond, Monticello, Mt. Zion, Oreana, Sherman and Taylor Springs.

The teams travel around the nation to compete at the highest levels possible. Premier Fastpitch is for players who want to push themselves to be better, not only as softball players, but as individuals. The organization’s goal is not only to prepare for the next level, but also to develop a passion for the game and a determination to win.
