2018 PCPS Summer Camps

 

Passionate Educators

Powhatan County Public Schools showcase a summer staff that includes highly-engaging educators excited about learning and skilled at equipping students to become life-long learners.

 Diverse Offerings

The camp offerings target all learners and span a wide-range of curricula. Our camp focus is the whole student and developing multi-faceted skills including teamwork, problem solving, collaboration, flexibility, written and spoken communication, as well as goal setting.

 Times and Locations

Summer Camps will be held at Powhatan High School and Pocahontas Elementary School unless otherwise indicated.  Please see the camp descriptions for the specific location of your camp.


Camp hours are 8:00 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.(Pocahontas Elementary School) /12:45 P.M. (Powhatan High School). Camp times may be slightly adjusted for camps at Powhatan High School to accommodate bus transportation needs. Any adjustments will be communicated with participants prior to the first day of camp. There will be a 15-minute snack break during the day. Snacks are not provided.

 

Bus transportation is available for summer camp pick up and drop off for Powhatan High School and Pocahontas Elementary School during the month of July only. The buses will make stops at specific areas throughout the county. The bus routes will be posted online and at each camp location prior to the start of camp so you can decide the bus stop that is the most convenient for you.

 

Some camps have a minimum enrollment requirement. If a camp does not meet minimum enrollment requirements, parents will be notified and monies will be refunded. 

Registration and Payment

Camp registrations and payments need to be made by May 25, 2018. Payments can be made by cash, check, or online. Checks need to be made payable to Powhatan High School. Online payments can be made using credit or debit cards through your school’s website. Camp payments are non-refundable. Students will not be considered registered until payment has been received. Payment can be made online using MySchoolBucks. A link to this payment system is located on your school’s website. Payment is expected within t hree days of submitting an online registration.

Enrichment Camp Offerings

 

 Craft Camp

Description: Do you love to do crafts? Do you love personalized items? This camp is for you! Learn digital software and how to personalize your belongings. Along with this, we will paint, glitter and glue to create some fun crafts!

 El Mundo Hispanohablante - Spanish Language and Culture

Description: This camp is a terrific way for students to learn the Spanish language and culture while enjoying summer fun. It is designed to immerse the student in the Spanish language and culture through the 5 senses. Each day we will have a theme to focus the language and cultural learning. The students will learn and practice new vocabulary and utilize that vocabulary while experiencing the culture through a culinary dish, an art project, singing, dancing, and games.

 Engineering the Future

Description: Join us for a week of designing and creating with pneumatics, electrical circuits, robotics and other design challenges! Each day will feature a new kind of challenge.

 First Responders Camp

Description: This camp will provide students with American Heart Association First Aid and CPR/AED Certification for adult, infant and child. Other first responder skills, such as scene safety and assessment will be included.

 Fun with Science

Description: Explore a different science topic each day! We will BE scientists as we explore Forensic science, living systems, chemistry and more!

 Google Boot Camp

Description: Students will spend the week immersed in the G-Suite for Education apps and identified add-ons to increase productivity and organization. This session is recommended for students who have a working knowledge of Google's G-Suite and are comfortable with and interested in technologies other than gaming and social media.  Harry Potter:  A Week at Hogwarts

Description: Have you been waiting for an owl to bring your Hogwarts letter? Ever wondered What Hogwarts house you belong in or what a chocolate frog tasted like? Come get sorted, create your own potions, make a wand and learn spells! We will find out what your patronus is, visit Honeydukes, play games and don't forget about the scavenger hunt!!

 Heads Up/Hands-On Camp

Description: Campers will learn braiding techniques, using a curling Iron or wand, and manicure/ pedicuring with polishing techniques with some nail art.

Description: This camp is designed for students who have an interest in food, food history, and cooking in general. Students will learn basic food and kitchen safety while learning to prepare simple wholesome meals in a commercial kitchen.

 Le Monde Francophone - French Language and Culture

 Passport to Discovery:  Europe and Asia

Description: Grab your passport to for a fun-filled adventure to France, Italy, Spain, China, Germany and Greece. Participate in site seeing and experience culture and cuisine.  We will have lots of pictures to create a scrapbook of your trip.

Quilt Making 101

Dates:             July 16-19 OR July 23-26

Grade(s):        6-12

Description:   Learn the basics of sewing and quilting while making a small strip quilt.

Materials will be provided, including fabrics and sewing machines. As we will be working with scissors and needles, students need to be mature and aware to avoid injury.

So You Want to Be a Gaming Programmer?  Week 1

Grades:          Rising 7-12

Description: This session is week one of a two week series. Students will participate in an interactive learning environment for computer programming and coding that is fun, challenging and educational. Students will be programming with Python, one of the top programming languages in use today. During the week students will be introduced to fundamental computer science concepts, control and data structures, and best practices for coding and debugging Python. We will create the programming foundation of necessary skills for students to transition to PyGame, Python’s programming language library for making multimedia applications like games.

So You Want to Be a Gaming Programmer? Upping Your Game! Week 2 Instructor:                        Christa Fairman christa.fairman@powhatan.k12.va.us Location:   Powhatan High School

Grades:          Rising 7-12

Description: This is week two of a two-week series. If you missed week one, no worries, come and join us! You can work through Week 1 content while cheering your peers on with their Week 2 trials and celebrating the group’s successes. See the “So You Want to Be a Gaming Programmer?” for the description for week one.

Our second week takes us into PyGame, Python’s programming language library for making multimedia applications like games. Students will strengthen their programming, troubleshooting, and teambuilding skills while creating a 2D game. Come and join the fun. You may just discover your career!!

Cost:               $80.00 for campers who attended Week 1- $170.00 for new campers


 

 STEAM Creation Station

Description: Kids will have so much fun creating Slime and Lego Literacy, exploring app smashing,learning creative thinking with sewing machines, making computer clip art, designing with yarn, crocheting, creating musical inventions and more!

Description: Just for girls! Spend a week with girls exploring Engineering and Technology through arts and crafts. Working with other girls, Divas will be engaged in problem-solving, exploration and learn to look at things in a new way. Each day will be filled with hands-on activities to explore technology in a fun, creative environment. Returning Divas are welcome-  activities will build on your skills.

 Video Game Design

Description: Spend a week learning how to make your own video games and completing engineering projects. Learn to design your own video game characters, animations and sound effects to use in your own video games. Explore engineering principles through hands-on construction and design activities.
