SOL Academy 6, 7 or 8 – This is a class designed for students who show an academic weakness and/or failed one or more SOL tests.  Students will review and strengthen their skills in reading, writing, and math.  This course assists students in preparing for seventh grade SOL tests.  This course is NOT a substitute for a course failed during the school year.  Attendance is subject to principal’s approval.  There is no charge for this course.

Special Education Remediation 6-8 – This course is geared to help the special education student maintain the progress he/she has gained in reading, writing, and math during the regular school year.  Only 6th/7th/8th grade students with a current IEP will be accepted into the program.  Class size is limited to seven students.  There is no charge for this course.

*Middle School Promotion Policy - Students are required to pass five of seven classes that must include three of four core (English, math, science, history/social sciences) classes, to be promoted to the next grade level. Students not passing English or Math must complete summer school.

Online Health/PE for Grade 9 - Students are required to successfully complete the course content and plan/implement a personal wellness/activity plan. Seventy hours of physical activity plus the equivalent of 70 hours of online health instruction are necessary. The final grade will be based on written assessments and the quantity/quality of physical activity. With the exception of fitness testing and health assessments, all activities will be completed off campus. The Powhatan YMCA has agreed to allow online students access to the facility at no cost. Students and their parents will be required to attend an orientation and sign a usage agreement.  Internet access is required. Orientation Date: May 8, 6:00 p.m. at PHS in the Auditorium.  A second orientation on May 17 for technical connectivity is also scheduled in L100. The course must be started by May 20 to ensure that students have enough time to complete the course requirements by July 20, with the Final on July 25. Two additional required meeting sessions will be scheduled by the instructor to complete the midterm and final assessments. Students will be contacted by the instructor once registered.  The cost for the course is $200 plus the cost of a fitness band. At the first orientation, students will be provided with a list of compatible bands. The band prices begin at approximately $50.
