PTSA CITIZENSHIP AWARD: Each year the Potsdam PTSA, in consultation with the high school staff, selects a senior to receive this award of $100 in recognition of community service.

The Youth Humanitarian Award in Memory of Stanley Marcus application is available on the NYS PTA website. It is now available in both fillable Word format and in .pdf format. We honor the memory of Stanley Marcus, who was a both a dedicated volunteer committed to serving youth and a NYS PTA Vice President, by sponsoring this prestigious award. All high school junior and senior students who exemplify the humanitarian principals of Stanley Marcus and attend a school with a PTA/PTSA unit in good standing are encouraged to submit applications. Applications must be postmarked by January 31, 2012 and sent to your Region Director. Each year we receive applications from outstanding, caring students who selflessly give their time and energy to their schools and community and it is with great pleasure that we acknowledge their service. If you have a student who you think deserves to be recognized, the application is just a click away.

Jenkins Memorial Scholarship for Teacher Education - The Jenkins Memorial Scholarship was inaugurated in October, 1946, as a special Golden Anniversary Project. In 1947 the fund was established as a permanent project as a living memorial to the young people who lost their lives in military service during WWII and was named for one of them, Clifford N. Jenkins, Jr., son of Margaret Jenkins, New York State PTA President 1944-1947 and National PTA President 1961-1964. The purpose of the project is to assist outstanding students in preparing for the teaching profession. The application is available in both fillable Word format and in .pdf format.

Find 100 Ways to Get Involved in Your Child's Education

National PTA has partnered with The Ad Council to launch a three-year public service advertising (PSA) campaign designed to encourage parents to become more involved in their children's schools and education. The campaign targets English- and Spanish-speaking parents of school-age children, urging them to "Know What Really Matters. Know About Your Kid's School and Know About Your Kid."

In support of the campaign, National PTA provides the 100 Ways to Know More. Do More. website, which provides articles and handy tips for parents about getting involved in their children's educations, the campaign's video PSAs (as seen on TV), and ordering information for the "100 Ways to Know More. Do More." brochure.

PTA Partners With Consumer Reports for School Safety Program

The National PTA has recently partnered with Consumer Reports and the National School Boards Association to form the School Safety Alert Program to alert parents, schools and educators immediately to imminent dangers and allow them to remove potentially dangerous - even lethal - products from their homes and schools.

Previously recalled products are one of the top hidden hazards in the home. Most recall information never reaches a family until tragedy strikes. Tens of millions of children are needlessly exposed to unsafe products, toys and foods that have been recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This is why National PTA has partnered with Consumer Reports and the National School Boards Association to form the School Safety Alert Program. The School Safety Alert program will alert parents, school administrators, and educators immediately to imminent dangers and allow them to remove potentially dangerous even lethal products from their homes and schools.

2012 National PTA Federal Public Policy Agenda

Each year National PTA publishes a public policy agenda that outlines policy priorities and recommendations for Congress. The priorities are selected based on the following criteria: timeliness of issue (is it being considered before Congress and the Administration), opportunities for National PTA to provide leadership and expertise to Congress, alignment to National PTA's mission and resolutions, and ability to achieve a meaningful policy change that will produce positive results for children and their families.

The 2011 Public Policy Agenda focuses on two key priorities:

    • Family Engagement in Education
    • Opportunity and Equity for all Children.

    NYS PTA Supports Military Families

At a workshop presented at the NYS PTA 2010 Convention in Buffalo this year, Carol West and Deanna Lothrop from the NYS Parental Information and Resource Center (NYSPIRC) described many services and programs available to the families where one or both parents are deployed in the military. They discussed the six stages of transition that families go through and how it affects children of different ages. They had many suggestions on what schools and communities could do.

Here are some suggested resources and programs - most are free!

See the following web sites for these programs and other ideas:

PTA members may wish to join National PTA's Member-to-Member Network, the grassroots advocacy system that provides direct contact with members of Congress, and occasionally with federal regulatory agencies. When contact is needed, National PTA's Washington, DC, office issues Action Alerts that describe the pending legislative issue and the action needed. Network participants also have access to a staff liaison who can answer their questions and assist in their advocacy efforts.
