Principal's Corner

Mrs. Joann Chambers

I am thrilled to be serving as principal of Potsdam High School.  I am a North Country native.  I grew up in Hopkinton, New York, and graduated from Parishville-Hopkinton Central School.  I earned by B.A. in English Writing from SUNY Potsdam and my M.A. in Reading from SUNY Potsdam as well.  I later earned a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from St. Lawrence University.

I began my teaching career at Lowville Academy and Central School where I taught 9th and 11th grade English for five years.  I then spent the next two years at Pulaski Academy and Central School teaching 8th grade English.  I came to Potsdam in 1994 and spent the next ten years teaching 7th grade English at A.A. Kingston Middle School.  In 2004, I was hired as the principal of Lawrence Avenue Elementary, where I remained for the next four years.  I began as principal of Potsdam High School on July 12008.

I live in Potsdam with my husband, Pete, and our two children – Katie, a senior, and Michael, a freshman, and our chocolate lab, Jessie.  I enjoy reading, running, hiking, boating, and going to our kids’ basketball games.  I also love learning and always have several books and professional journals on my bedside stand.

I am proud to be a part of the Potsdam Central School District.   We live in a community that values education, and the teachers, staff, administration and Board of Education all have a common belief in high expectations for all students.  I believe as a school we need to continually reinvent ourselves so that we can be certain we are meeting the needs of all of our students, and keeping up with the rapidly changing world.

Finally, I believe that parents and school staff must work together to ensure that we are doing all we can to help students develop into life-long learners and productive citizens.  I am so appreciate of the support I get from parents when I call to tell them about a problem at school.  I have not encountered a parent yet who didn’t want to do what they can to help their child be successful.

I would love to hear from parents and community members.  Please feel as though you can speak with me anytime, anywhere, if something is on your mind.  Email is a great vehicle as well.
