Welcome to ENVIROBASE!

Portsmouth Fifth Grade classes will attend ENVIROBASE - Aquarius for 4 visits to explore local environmental problems through experimental design and the engineering design process.  In addition to exploring environmental problems, the students will develop teamwork skills and learn about STEM careers related to the environment.

ENVIROBASE- Aquarius promotes environmental stewardship.  Students are provided opportunities to investigate their own local watershed (the Elizabeth River) and the Chesapeake Bay. It is important for students to understand the impact of human activity within the watershed on water quality and the organisms that depend upon a healthy water system for survival.

Essential Questions:

  • What is the human impact on the natural environment?
  • What is the impact of natural phenomena on the local environment?
  • What are the local weather patterns over time and what is the effect of natural cycles on the local environment?
  • How does our local environment compare to other areas of the nation/world?
  • What can we do to help protect our local watershed and become environmental stewards?
